GLYPHOSATE IS MARKETED AS ROUNDUP!
Surprise?! Wait for it… Moms across political lines agree: Glyphosate, a scientifically-proven neurotoxin for kids and people, is detrimental to our children—and it shouldn’t be sprayed on our food supply. [1]
Now here’s the twist: President Trump (and RFK Jr.) campaigned on the promise to all moms and families (including the MAHA moms who voted for them!) to limit the use of glyphosate. Instead, President Trump just issued an Executive Order to EXPAND domestic glyphosate production, not limit it. [2]
You read the above right: President Trump and U.S. Secretary of Health RFK Jr. acted in the exact opposite direction than they promised moms—and the opposite of what they promised the entire nation—on the campaign trail. And, as moms, we know: Actions speak louder than words.
The good news is, across political lines, members of Congress have come together to introduce the No Immunity for Glyphosate Act in response to Trump and RFK Jr.’s complete abandonment of the promises of their Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda. This bill would:
- Prohibit the use of federal funds to implement President Trump’s Executive Order (EO). This means that federal agencies would be barred from using appropriated funds to administer or enforce the EO; and,
- Ensure that glyphosate manufacturers are not immune from civil liability. Manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers of glyphosate cannot claim immunity under the Defense Production Act, federal contractor defenses, or other federal authorities, and would preserve the right of injured individuals to pursue claims under federal and state law. [3]
Glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide and drying agent, is no good. In fact one NIH published scientific study found: “Exposure to glyphosate during the early stages of life can severely affect normal cell development by deregulating some of the signaling pathways involved in this process, leading to alterations in differentiation, neuronal growth, migration, and myelination. Glyphosate also seems to exert a significant toxic effect on neurotransmission, with the glutamatergic system being one of the most affected systems.” [4]
In addition to research showing it’s a neurotoxin, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies glyphosate as a probable carcinogen for humans. Mounting scientific evidence is showing the link between glyphosate and multiple forms of cancer, as well as health impacts for young children.[5] With these red flags threatening the health of our children and families, the time to act is now, not enable the continued use of this toxin.
Tying this hazardous chemical to national security in order to ramp up production while opening the door to liability shields for chemical companies is dangerous to our children and our communities. This Executive Order has nothing to do with protecting families or feeding the country—it’s about protecting corporate profits and insulating polluters from accountability. This bill would put immediate protections in place against the unchecked use of glyphosate and prioritize families over profits.
Congress was elected to do the work of the people—and moms and families care most about the health, safety, and thriving future for all of our children. Big business has enough corporate lobbyists, they don’t need Congress doing their bidding. Glyphosate has no place near our food and water supply. The bottom line: If Congress is serious about Making America Healthy Again, our government shouldn't be promoting glyphosate and providing liability immunity for the mega corporations making it.
