Birth control access may be the public health issue of 2023

 

When we asked this community what public health issues Congress should focus on, protecting the right to contraception was at the top of the list. There's good news: An organization called Americans for Contraception is launching now to stop the Supreme Court and extreme politicians from taking away the contraception that so many people count on. This past July -- one month after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade -- House Democrats put forth a bill to protect the right to contraception, and 195 Republicans voted against it. You read that right. 90% of House Republicans voted against our right to basic contraception like condoms, the pill, and IUDs -- tools that millions of us use to control our bodies and our lives. And Trump-appointed judges are adding fuel to the fire. Just last week, a federal judge in Texas ruled that health care centers that get federal money must get parents' consent before providing birth control to teens. At a time when people are losing the right to control their own bodies, protecting the right to contraception has never been more crucial.
