Petition: Tell Congress no kid should go hungry at school!

 

Dear Friend,

Right now, more than 9 MILLION kids are going hungry 💔. And things got even worse this summer when a program expired that gave free school meals to millions more kids during the pandemic.

It’s heartbreaking to think so many kids are hungry at school – it makes it impossible to learn, let alone thrive. But now we can do something about it.

Negotiations are happening RIGHT NOW on next year’s budget – and some politicians are trying to include extra funding for an expanded free school meal program that would help millions of kids.

We don’t have much time to make our voices heard – can you send your Senators a quick email asking them to keep kids from going hungry at school? (It just takes a few minutes and I’ll give you the info you need!)

During the pandemic, all schools were able to provide free school meals to all students. It made a huge difference in making sure kids weren’t going hungry during an incredibly challenging time.

Then Republicans cut the program from the budget earlier this year. Thousands of us came together to demand they extend the program – and the pressure worked when Congress reached a bipartisan agreement to extend the program through the summer.

But this school year millions of kids lost the free meals they’d been relying on. And now school meal debt has increased and children eligible for free school meals are once again experiencing stigma in the cafeteria.

Congress has the opportunity to act NOW to expand the reach of free school meals to millions more children. By expanding the Community Eligibility Provision in next year’s budget, many more schools will be able to provide free meals to all their students.
