8 deaths, 398 new COVID-19 cases on Cape and Islands

There were 9,216 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing the total number to 1,959,910 since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.     

In their weekly report, state officials also noted 1,651 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 185,057.     

As of Dec. 20, 285 patients were primarily hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses and 908 total patients were hospitalized with COVID-19, the state agency reported.   

There were 101 patients in intensive care units, or ICUs, and 38 patients were intubated.    

Closer to home, in Thursday's weekly report, state health officials said Barnstable County posted 363 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 47,159 since the pandemic started. Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard) reported eight new coronavirus cases, for a to-date total of 4,284. Nantucket County reported 26 new cases for a total of 3,857.   

Case numbers are than higher last week’s report, which showed 275 new cases on the Cape and Islands.  

The state’s 14-day positivity rate was 8.95%. The 14-day positivity rate for Barnstable County came in at 9.9%, and 7.72% for Dukes and Nantucket counties.     

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 21 patients with coronavirus, with two in the ICU. Falmouth Hospital reported eight patients, with one in the ICU.  

State health officials said Thursday there were 96 new deaths statewide among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 21,149 since the pandemic began.      

There were 14 deaths statewide from probable cases of COVID-19. The number of deaths from probable cases is 1,644 in Massachusetts.     

Barnstable County posted seven new deaths, the state agency reported. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 is 717 in Barnstable County. There was one new death in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 24 since the pandemic began in March 2020.        

The two-week COVID-19 case count, total case count and 14-day testing positivity rate for Cape Cod towns follows:         

Barnstable (144; 12,064; 11.73%); Bourne (65; 4,464; 11.45%); Brewster (29; 1,841; 12.11%); Chatham (11; 1,112; 8.39%); Dennis (32; 2,952; 8.93%); Eastham (5; 652; 4.8%); Falmouth (98; 5,917; 8.38%); Harwich (28; 2,628; 9.94%); Mashpee (32; 3,275; 8.03%); Orleans (16; 1,023; 9.14%): Provincetown (less than five; 501; 5%); Sandwich (28; 4,414; 6.33%); Truro (less than five; 217; 7.41%); Wellfleet (less than five; 344; 6.94%) and Yarmouth (79; 5,755; 12.84%).
