On Friday morning over 600 hundred Louisianans showed up to the Louisiana state capitol to protest and speak out against a new Congressional map proposed by the Louisiana GOP that will erase Louisiana's two black majority districts and establish all white districts. During the hearing on redistricting, GOP State Senator Jay Morris yelled "Shut up, boy" to my Executive Director Dadrius Lanus, a Black man, who, in Sen. Morris’s words was “commenting and talking” too loudly for him to concentrate. Sir, I am a 70 year old Black man and we know what it means to be called “Boy.” Senator Morris says we misheard. That the audio proves it. That he said “you all need to shut up” to the Black constituents behind him outraged that their votes won't be counted. Senator Morris, an elected member of our legislature, thinks if he had yelled “you all need to shut up” it would be better. It wouldn't. What Senator Morris doesn’t understand is that White people have been telling Black folk to “shut up" for over 250 years. What Senator Morris doesn’t understand is that we remember being told we were 3/5ths of a person. That even when we won personhood in the eyes of the law, they instituted poll taxes and “reading” tests. That when we marched and dreamed and cried and buried loved ones who had hung as strange fruit from tall trees because they raised their voices too loud that what Black people have always wanted is equality. Or maybe Senator Morris does understand all that. I don’t know. What I do know is that I am a 70 year old Black man. And I don’t let anyone call me or my brothers “Boy.” Please, chip in even $1 today. Let’s show Senator Morris that they might have gutted the Voting Rights Act and canceled our election.
