Hawaii Just Killed Citizens United and More Great News That Ruined Trump’s Weekend

A grieving son rewrote the law. Small businesses beat Trump’s tariffs in court. And Denver told the DOJ to go to hell.

The story of Hawaii becoming the first state in the country to effectively end Citizens United won’t be told this way anywhere else. Hit the ❤️ like button and re-stack this edition right now to punch a hole through the MAGA spin.

We’re powered by one source—our readers. No advertisers, shaping what we cover. No corporation that owns us. No billionaire who is friends with Trump.

Just more than a decade of fighting back, funded entirely by people who decided the truth is worth investing in. Join us as a paid subscriber today:

GRIEF BECAME LAW IN MINNESOTA

MN Gov. Tim Walz

Colin Hortman’s parents were assassinated by a politically motivated gunman last June. He then spent eight months fighting insurance companies and bureaucratic indifference just to be able to safely re-enter his childhood home.

When he testified at the Minnesota Capitol, he told lawmakers his family had lawyers, government connections, and the ability to wait. Most families have none of that. He described wanting to sit at his parents’ kitchen table one last time—and being unable to because the house still wasn’t safe. Tear gas residue everywhere—and nobody would tell him what chemicals were used, or who was supposed to pay to clean it up.

Sen. Bonnie Westlin, a Democrat from Plymouth, turned his testimony into two bills. One forces police to disclose what chemicals are deployed during law enforcement operations inside a building. Another forces homeowner’s insurance to cover the cleanup. Both passed with strong bipartisan support.

On Tuesday, Gov. Tim Walz signed them into law. Walz also signed a separate bill renaming Minnesota’s community solar garden program after Melissa Hortman. She spent her life powering this state. Now she always will.

COURTS KEEP KILLING TRUMP’S TARIFFS

It’s the second time in three months a court told Trump his tariffs are illegal. In February, the Supreme Court struck them down. Trump tried again with a 10% worldwide tariff under a Trade Act from 1974.

On Thursday the Court of International Trade found those to be illegal too, ruling 2-1 against Trump. That made his tariffs invalid.

Small businesses sued to stop them—small businesses won.

The regime will appeal, and the case will eventually head back to the Supreme Court—which has already ruled against him once. Trump ran on making “the best deals” and he can’t even keep his own tariffs legal. Judges keep saying no.

DENVER TELLS DOJ: “HELL NO”

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston

On April 28, Trump’s DOJ sent letters to Colorado and Denver city leaders—demanding they declare their own laws unconstitutional, and sign permanent court orders agreeing to never pass similar legislation again. The kind of demand losing lawyers send when they’ve got nothing left.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston answered from the steps of Denver’s City Hall: “We’re here today to let them know our answer is hell no.” He closed with names the DOJ apparently forgot: “In Colorado, you only have to say the places. Columbine. Aurora. Boulder.”

City Attorney Miko Brown called the DOJ’s demand “baseless, irresponsible, and a clear overreach”—then cited six federal appeals courts that upheld similar laws since 2022.

The DOJ sued Denver on Tuesday and Colorado on Wednesday. But six courts have already told them how this ends.

HAWAII STOPS CITIZENS UNITED

Hawaii state Senator Karl Rhoads

For sixteen years, corporations have poured unlimited amounts of secret money into American elections—thanks to a Supreme Court decision called Citizens United. The court said corporations have free speech rights and can spend whatever they want on elections.

Hawaii found the one thing the court never addressed: corporations only exist because states allow them to. Which means that every power a corporation has was given to it by the state. Hawaii just took one of those powers off the list—starting next year, corporations in Hawaii can no longer spend money on elections.

A bill from Democratic State Sen. Karl Rhoads—co-authored by Republican Rep. Kanani Souza—does just that, and it passed both chambers with bipartisan support. It now heads to Gov. Josh Green, who has committed to signing the legislation.

No other state has ever passed anything like it. Will it face legal challenges? Yes—Hawaii’s own Attorney General said so. Americans across party lines have wanted this gone for sixteen years—bring it on.

This is what we do. Every single day, we find the stories the regime hopes you never see, tell them without softening a word, and make sure they reach people who would otherwise only hear Trump’s spin.

The victories in this edition aren’t small. These are the fights that decide what this country becomes—and we will be here with you for every single one of them.

We’ve been doing this longer than almost anyone in independent media—since February 2016. Before most outlets took the threat of Trump seriously, before resistance journalism even had a name.

There’s more the regime is hiding, and we’ll be here to uncover it all. But this work only happens because readers fund it. If you haven’t yet, join us as a paid subscriber today:

Onward!

Do you think Hawaii’s Citizens United law survives the courts?

Denver said hell no to the DOJ. What’s your hell no this week?

NEW: Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have announced the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center Moratorium Act, legislation that would enact a reasonable pause to the development of AI to ensure the safety of humanity.

JUST A FEW OF MANY INFORMED COMMENTS:

TY for this news !!!

Sent letters to Ohio Reps and Senators !

Just wondering...we followed the REPUBLICAN SCANDALS and RICO TRIALS of widespread CORRUPTION that cheated RATE PAYERS as well as the egregious failures to protect FIRST RESPONDERS in the TRAIN CRASH that spewed TOXIC FUMES across not only a neighborhood that continues to suffer the HEALTH CONSEQUENCES of CONTAMINATION, but spread to neighboring states.

How is it possible that VOTERS continue to support REPUBLICANS who have failed to protect them?

A few thoughts came together yesterday while composing a response to a reply to one of my comments on another newsletter. The following is an updated version of that response.

It's important to respond adaptively to AI, but to do that, we need to understand the nature of the threat and the opportunity, and to do that, we need to understand the relationship between AI and NI (natural intelligence).

Human culture evolves. Everything gets better if it evolves in a positive direction. In that case, evolution was adaptive. Everything gets worst if it evolves in a negative direction. In that case, evolution was maladaptive. We can’t stop it from evolving, but if we know what we are doing, then we can end maladaptive evolution.

Cultural evolution is sometimes adaptive and other times maladaptive because the underlying thought process is sometimes adaptive and other times maladaptive.

There is a simple 3-step adaptive thought process … Step 1: Trust. Step 2: Verify. Step 3: Return to Step 1 and repeat. An adult conversation is a manifestation of the adaptive thought process.

There is a simple 3-step maladaptive thought process … Step 1: Assume I’m right. Step 2: Blame someone or something for what went wrong. Step 3: Return to Step 1 and repeat. If I assume someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about and I don't bothering to verify the assumption, then my behavior is a manifestation of the maladaptive thought process.

Our culture evolves adaptively toward excellence or maladaptively in the other direction. In the words of Dr. W. Edwards Deming (1900-1993), “Survival is not mandatory.”

As MLK would say, we need fewer thermometers and more thermostats. Our collective understanding of the undesirable current state is important, insufficiently accurate, and much less important than our collective engagement with the path toward the desirable future state.

The cause of the undesirable current state is too many people forming the (bad) maladaptive thought habit by not deliberately practicing the (good) adaptive thought process. In the desirable future state, everyone deliberately practices the adaptive thought process until it is the only habit. But don’t take my word for it.

Almost two and a half millennia ago, Aristotle (384-322 BC) said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Sam Alito claims to be an originalist. I claim that anybody that’s not a nobody knows that Sam’s a big phony.

Don’t forget the words of Patrick Geddes (1854-1932), who said, “Think global, act local.” And remember when Anonymous said, “Nothing is more local than the person in the mirror.”

Done. Fortunately, MN has 2 dedicated, intelligent, hardworking Senators - KLobuchar & Smith. We are, however, saddled with idiot and bootlicker Tom Emmer. Mr. Emmer does have a STELLAR competitor this election: Doug Chapin. He has a well-organized campaign, lots of volunteers, and a damn good chance of unseating the vainglorious Mr. Emmer.

You forgot to mention Pete Stauber. The shithead that betrayed his state in favor of a Chilean mining company.

Yes he did, sold out the BWCA - a stellar natural resource that cannot be duplicated, and which employs thousands of people and brings in $350 million PER YEAR in tourism. BUT... do not despair: this ain't over yet. The State of Minnesota is required to issue work permits. We in MN are not going to just roll over!!!

The DNR can still pull the lease too. And the BWCA pulls in closer to a Billion annually in tourism $$.

I have many hell no s!

And I hope Hawaii denying citizens United in their state is upheld. It would be nice if the other 49 states followed.

Many states have this on their agenda. There’s also an measure on the ballot in Montana (or they are trying to get it there ) I know a bunch of other states consider and in WA there are groups working to get this in front of legislators.

This is HUGE news and I’m not sure why it’s not being spread everywhere? Oh well, we just have to fix that! 💪

You aren’t sure why it’s not making national news? Aw, you know why! Citizens United essentially owns our mainstream news!

American capitalism is not the capitalism of free markets, free press, and a level playing field anymore. It is thoroughly corrupted now, with money, *vicious greed*, and the total absence of decency, social responsibility, honor, compassion or conscience — and it’s time for radical, strong and enforceable LAWS to be added to stop this atrocious reality.

We all need to follow HI’s lead!! And reform the SCOTUS while we are at it.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Hawaii! WOW! I am giddy with this great news, Scott! I hope they will win in court because the American people have been screaming to abolish Citizens United for years and years now. If Hawaii can do it, then so can the rest of the states! If our federal government refuses to serve the people and what the majority want, then our states will step up and do it for them! Way to go, Hawaii! My biggest Hell to the No this week was to that republican governor that took it upon himself to cancel and election that was already underway! He doesn't have that right! Keep fighting, America! Stay strong and stay safe!

It was Governor Landry from Louisiana. I hope the people of Louisiana demand to have him impeached.

I hope I didn't misread this, but I believe there is a petition to do just that! I sincerely hope they get the signatures they need and can get it done!

I would love to see that happen! I hear the bayou is lovely this time of year!

The petition is to recall Gov. Landry. Our R dominated legislature would certainly not impeach him.

See my comment about Gov. Landry. Landry and his regime of hat has a tight grip on Louisiana.

NEW: Trump’s lies about the ballroom may be among his most galling to date - and that's saying something. Take action: https://tinyurl.com/msfpatpw

Tell Congress: Don't use my tax dollars for Trump's ballroom

Trump’s lies about the ballroom may be among his most galling to date - and that's saying something.

He tore down a third of the White House without approval from anyone and said he and his private corporate donors were paying for a luxury ballroom to be built.

Destroying property that belonged to the American people in order to set up a pay-to-play bribery scheme was bad enough, but now we find out that taxpayers are footing the bill for five times more than he originally said it would cost.

Republican senators, led by Senator Lindsey Graham, have introduced a bill to fund the construction of the 90,000-square-foot ballroom to the tune of $400 million slapped on the American taxpayer.

And now it gets worse - Senate Republicans want to include an additional $1 billion in funding for security upgrades associated with the ballroom in the Department of Homeland Security spending bill.

Trump’s call for taxpayers to foot the bill to build a palatial White House ballroom and bunker after a failed assassination attempt is a grievous political misstep and a sad waste of precious presidential power.

The White House should be a residence for the president, not a palace for an autocrat.

And this comes at a time when consumers can’t even afford to fill their family cars with gasoline, pay for medical costs, groceries and rent, or even feed their families - all due to Trump’s erratic and asinine tariff policy and reckless war of choice in Iran.

The Bottom Line: We don’t need a massive luxury ballroom at the White House—we need Congress focused on improving the lives of working families.

Americans don’t want Trump turning Washington, D.C., and the White House into his vanity project.
