Biden sets record with 1,500 commutations, 39 pardons… “America was built on the promise of possibility and second chances,” the President Biden said while issuing a record number of commutations. The number more than quadrupled the previous record set by President Obama and in particular included non-violent offenders, especially those convicted of drug offenses. Biden’s action drew praise from progressives, who had pushed the president to issue a large number of commutations and pardons following his pardon of his son, Hunter. Still, the same progressives who praised today’s commutations and pardons are advocating for more.
Trump’s administration to include man who pushed jail for women who have abortions… Donald Trump as a candidate in 2016 said “there has to be some form of punishment” for women seeking abortion care. His handpicked bought-and-paid-for Supreme Court has since overturned 50 years of precedent in Roe v Wade. And now, as he returns to the White House, Trump has chosen president of socially conservative group Phyllis Schlafly Eagles Ed Martin as chief of staff at the Office of Management and Budget. Martin advocates a national abortion ban with no exceptions and criminal penalties for women.
Flock of drones over New Jersey produces more questions than answers… Residents and local officials are understandably growing impatient as they demand answers from authorities as hundreds of drones have been cited around Middletown township, New Jersey. So far, the answers to those questions remain a mystery–though authorities have apparently ruled out foreign actors as the cause.
Trump invites President Xi to his inauguration… We hate to admit it, but next month Donald Trump will be inaugurated for a second time. Among Trump’s invitees? Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping. It sounds like a high schooler inviting their nemesis to a party just as an insult–not exactly diplomatic. But Trump is Trump. And the once and future president has threatened massive tariffs on Chinese imports that would act as a tax increase on American consumers.
