Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson want to scare you. Moments ago, they put on a show at Mar-a-Lago fear mongering about their latest totally made up threat to our elections – because they think it’s the easiest way to intimidate Congress into supporting their actual agenda: passing laws to take millions of voters’ rights away. [1] Here’s the truth: it’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and there is ZERO evidence of any widespread voter fraud. [2] But there’s plenty of evidence that scare tactics like these hurt all of us – demonizing immigrants, scaring newly naturalized citizens out of voting, and advancing policies that make it harder for all eligible voters to cast a ballot. ADD MY NAMEIt's already against the law to vote illegally, no matter who does it – it’s in the name! States have multiple systems in place to deter noncitizen voting – and study after study shows that illegal voting by anyone is extremely rare. Even conservative think tanks can't find any evidence to back up Trump's claims – just look at the Heritage Foundation, which went digging for examples and only found 24 instances of noncitizens voting out of hundreds of millions of votes cast in the last 20 years. [2] Time and time again, we can see that the real threat to the integrity of our elections is when politicians like Trump and Johnson try to silence eligible voters. The shameful, anti-immigrant and anti-voter sentiments expressed by Trump and Johnson have no place in our democracy. Those in power should be focused on encouraging voters and increasing participation in our elections by passing pro-voter reforms like the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
