Yesterday, I was joined by women across North Carolina and the country who shared stories about what the legal landscape looks like for women in a post-Roe world. WFAE covered the event:
“One speaker was Amanda Zurawksi of Austin, Texas. She said she discovered last year — 18 weeks into her pregnancy — that her baby would not survive. She said she couldn’t get an abortion because of Texas’ new law, which bans most abortions after six weeks.
“'We were told that I just had to wait until I got so sick that my life was considered in danger, which is one of the rare cases a doctor can intervene in the state of Texas,' she said. 'It took three days and a near crash into septic shock before my doctor could finally provide the health care that I needed.'” - WFAE 90.7 FM
Even though her pregnancy wasn't viable, the doctors did not provide care for her in time because of Texas law. She ended up in the ICU and almost died.
We have to make sure this doesn't happen here.
Make no mistake: North Carolina's abortion ban was made possible because of Tricia Cotham, Donald Trump and their MAGA Republican allies. Just this week, Trump said he was ‘proudly the one responsible’ for overturning Roe v. Wade, and endorsed every state-led effort to enact extreme abortion bans, including those without exceptions for rape or incest.
Think about that for a second. Donald Trump and Mark Robinson would have survivors of assault carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.
Now more than ever, we need to elect leaders who will prevent right-wing attempts to repeal longstanding reproductive rights and freedoms. That’s why the work Planned Parenthood Votes! is so important, and why I'm honored to be one of their endorsed candidates.
We can't let a Texas-style abortion ban pass in North Carolina.
Please join Planned Parenthood Votes! in lending your support to our campaign.
