Climate breakdown

 

The Earth’s climate is breaking down.   That is not hyperbole, that is reality. It is an indisputable scientific fact.   A series of reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have warned of a “code red for humanity” and stress that we are nearly out of time to change course.   Climate scientists like Peter Kalmus are now protesting around the world to coerce government action.

Despite the clear science and the urgent calls to mobilize, Congress continues to delay concrete action on the climate crisis. Too many of them are in the pocket of the very industries and corporations that are profiting off the continued destruction.   When BNC was founded in 2016, we assembled a group of policy experts to help develop an ambitious economic agenda that would radically transform the United States economy off of fossil fuels and develop sustainable infrastructure.   That plan included a just transition for those who work in industries that will be shut down by the eradication of fossil fuels, as well as healthcare for all, strong unions and living wages – all with the goal of creating jobs to build a sustainable future.   If that sounds familiar, it’s because this plan became the framework of The Green New Deal that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced her first month in Congress.   The Green New Deal has been dismissed and derided by the political establishment. But it is quite literally the blueprint for our survival – both ecologically and economically.   That’s why BNC is working hard to elect more champions for the GND who won’t take money from fossil fuels and other big polluters. In his recent op-ed for The Guardian, climate scientist Peter Kalmus writes:   “It’s now the eleventh hour and I feel terrified for my kids, and terrified for humanity. I feel deep grief over the loss of forests and corals and diminishing biodiversity. But I’ll keep fighting as hard as I can for this Earth, no matter how bad it gets, because it can always get worse. And it will continue to get worse until we end the fossil fuel industry and the exponential quest for ever more profit at the expense of everything else.”   The science is clear.
