A quick note before we begin: one date jumped off the page in the filings behind today’s story. On June 10, 2025, CoreCivic’s PAC cut checks to two Republicans. Three weeks later, both voted for $45 billion in detention money. Your paid subscription made that find possible—thank you. To help us put these scoops in front of more voters before Election Day, you can become a Founding Member or gift a subscription. Trump Fills The ICE Prisons. The Prison Companies Fund Nine GOP Senate Candidates.Every name, from the filings nobody added up. Also: Georgia’s voters, Jerome Powell, and 30,000 prison workers all beat Trump this week. Two of the biggest private prison corporations in America—the companies ICE pays to lock people behind bars—have been dumping campaign money into at least nine of this fall’s Republican Senate races. More than $150,000 of it. Cable news was too busy bowing to Trump to notice. Corporate reporters didn’t take the time to add it up. We spent days buried in campaign filings to pull the receipts and connect the dots ourselves. Before you scroll down, can you do two quick things for me? Tap the ❤️ like button, then hit restack, the button with two curved arrows. Restacking is like handing your copy of the paper to the neighbor over the fence, but better: it puts this post in front of everyone who follows you. Those candidates’ TV ads won’t mention who’s funding them. Your restack will. We refuse to put these findings behind a paywall when voters need to see who’s actually funding these Republican candidates. And since we are independent, our amazing community here funds all of our investigations. For our paid subscribers, I also just published a breakdown of this year’s battleground governors’ races—and the path to Democrats holding a majority of the nation’s governorships. If you want an independent watchdog in your corner who answers only to you, step up and join us as a paid subscriber today: We Found ICE’s Jailers Funding NineRepublicansWe couldn’t find anyone who had put this together, so we did. We went through the campaign filings of 11 Republicans running for the Senate this fall and pulled the checks from the executives, board members, and PACs of GEO Group and CoreCivic—the two biggest companies ICE pays to lock people up. At least nine of the 11 took the money: a combined total of more than $150,000 to their campaigns and fundraising committees. We found no refunds in any of their filings through their latest reports. Here’s why it matters. On July 1, 2025, Senate Republicans passed Trump’s budget bill when JD Vance broke a 50-50 tie. It included $45 billion to build more immigration detention centers. Both companies lobbied on it. ICE pays these companies mostly by the person, by the night, so every raid fills a bed and every bed pays. From April through June of this year, the two brought in $1.4 billion in revenue. The man running ICE today, David Venturella, spent 11 years at GEO. Three weeks before the vote, CoreCivic’s PAC wrote checks to two campaigns: Dan Sullivan’s in Alaska and Ashley Hinson’s in Iowa. Both voted for the bill. Ashley Moody of Florida voted yes, too—and that fall, a dozen GEO executives and employees gave to her fundraising committee. One of them used to run ICE. Jon Husted of Ohio voted yes. Nine weeks later, CoreCivic’s then-CEO maxed out to his campaign. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska voted yes, and that October CoreCivic’s PAC sent his campaign $5,000. The same day, it sent $5,000 to Michael Whatley’s campaign in North Carolina. That former CEO, Damon Hininger, didn’t stop there. He gave $25,000 to Ken Paxton’s joint fundraising committee in Texas and $660,000 to the Republican National Committee. And Susan Collins? She chairs the committee that writes ICE’s budget. Both companies’ PACs send her campaign checks. Last December, Nenko Gantchev, 56, a Chicago business owner, died in GEO’s detention center in Baldwin, Michigan. ICE said it suspected natural causes, and a medical examiner later agreed. But four members of Congress had demanded an investigation—two of them citing reports from other detainees that he asked for medical help and didn’t get it in time. Ten weeks after he died, GEO’s PAC sent a check to Mike Rogers, the Republican running for Senate in Michigan. If ICE came to your town this year, these are the candidates its jailers are funding, in Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas. Now you know. Every one of those seats is on the ballot in 32 days. The campaigns did not respond to requests for comment. Georgia Voters’ Data Stays Out Of Trump’sHandsIn July 2025, the DOJ asked Georgia for its whole voter list along with birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers. According to the state, the DOJ wanted to run it all through the federal SAVE database to check on everyone’s citizenship. Later, it sent Georgia a deal to sign: if the DOJ found a problem with your name, the state would have to remove your record and send the whole list back again. But Georgia handed over only what state law allows—nothing with the private numbers. So the regime sued. In January, a judge threw that case out because it was filed in the wrong court. The regime tried again. But on Wednesday, Judge Victoria Marie Calvert threw that one out too. “Federal law does not preempt Georgia’s voter privacy law,” she wrote. Georgia’s law protecting your private information still stands. Calvert also noted the DOJ “has not agreed that the information would remain confidential.” The regime says it will probably appeal. But it has now lost 26 of these voter-data lawsuits. For now, Georgia voters’ Social Security numbers stay out of its hands. Jerome Powell Cleared. Trump’sSmear Is Dead. For more than a year, Trump treated Jerome Powell like a crook, hinting at fraud over the Fed’s over-budget headquarters renovation while he floated firing him. The Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into whether Powell misled Congress. After a string of losses in court, Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney in DC, dropped it in April to wait on the Fed’s inspector general, its own internal watchdog. On Wednesday, the watchdog delivered. Michael Horowitz’s 120-page report says the project was badly managed, then shuts the door: “At no point during our evaluation did we find reasonable grounds to believe that a violation of federal criminal law had occurred.” No misconduct, either. Even Kevin Warsh, the Fed chair Trump picked to replace Powell, agreed with the report, calling it “thorough and rigorous.” Trump demanded Powell resign anyway, asked Attorney General Todd Blanche to study the report, and said Powell should be sued if he won’t quit. Powell can still stay on the Fed board until January 2028. The law only lets Trump fire him for serious wrongdoing, and the watchdog just found no crime. 30,000 Prison Workers Just Got Their UnionBackOn Tuesday, about 30,000 people who work in America’s federal prisons won their union contract back, for now. A year ago, the Bureau of Prisons director tore it up and thanked Trump for being able to do so. Then the bureau went after its own people. Judge Vernon Oliver found that it pressured workers into not taking sick leave and threatened to fire union reps who talked to Congress or reporters. The union told the court one worker even got a letter accusing them of abusing sick leave—while they were in the hospital for kidney surgery. The bureau claimed it was about national security. But Oliver wasn’t buying it: “It is evident that national security was not the basis for this termination.” He ordered the contract “immediately” reinstated while the case goes on. The DOJ asked him to make the union put up an $8.75 million bond first—Oliver made it only $1,000. The same corrupt regime that found $45 billion for immigration jails is trying to break the union of the people who work in its own prisons. They lost. Three Flips From A MajorityRepublicans hold 26 governorships and Democrats hold 24. Thirty-six are on the ballot November 3, and the winners will still be in office to sign off on their states’ presidential results in 2028. The Math. A majority is 26. Cook Political Report rates five races toss-ups: Alaska, Georgia, Nevada, and Ohio, all held by Republicans—and Wisconsin, held by Democrats. Iowa, a Republican seat, leans Democratic, as do Democrats’ own seats in Arizona, Michigan, and Oregon. Kansas, a Democratic seat, leans Republican. Alaska. Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins takes 40% of first choices in AARP’s poll against three Republicans and wins the ranked-choice count by 10 points. The catch: 18% are undecided, and they lean right. Georgia. A coin flip. Rick Jackson leads Keisha Lance Bottoms 48% to 46% for InsiderAdvantage, and Big Data Poll has them tied at 50%. Iowa. Democrat Rob Sand leads Zach Lahn 54% to 42% in Marist’s poll, and independents are breaking his way 57% to 33%. Gov. Kim Reynolds isn’t running again, and this is Democrats’ likeliest flip. Kansas. GOP Senate President Ty Masterson leads Cindy Holscher 51% to 44% in Emerson’s poll. Republicans are favored to take this one back. Nevada. Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford leads Gov. Joe Lombardo 44% to 42% in Emerson’s September poll, with a 31-point lead among Hispanic voters. Ohio. Dr. Amy Acton leads Republican Vivek Ramaswamy 50% to 44% in Marist’s poll and 50% to 41% in Suffolk’s—both released this week. Wisconsin. Democrat David Crowley leads Rep. Tom Tiffany 49% to 46% among likely voters in Marquette’s poll, out Wednesday. This one is a must-win. The Bottom Line: If Democrats hold every seat they have except Kansas, they need Iowa plus two of the four Republican toss-ups. The polls above have them ahead in three of the four. Win all three and it’s 27 governorships to 23. Thirty-two days left until the midterms. Corporate media won’t touch stories like these because they’re absolutely terrified of losing access. We don’t care about access. We care about the truth. Nine Republican Senate candidates took private prison money. Most of it sat buried in thousands of pages of federal filings. So we spent days tracking it down, and named them publicly so you can hold them accountable. No one can ever call me to kill one of our investigations. There’s no billionaire or advertiser here telling us to take it easy on Trump. All thanks to the readers who fund us, which keeps us completely independent. We have at least 10 more battleground investigations locked and ready to drop before Election Day. But running down these filings around the clock only happens if we get the funding. JUST A FEW OF MANY COMMENTS WORTH READING:
Thank God that most of the fascists ruining the country, starting with Trump, are bumbling incompetent idiots.
Good heavens!!!! To quote HCR "Every morning I wake up to see what new hell awaits us"!
True, but with dangerous enablers with virtually unlimited resources (Thiel, Musk etc) and a pathetic corporate media that sane washes or ignores all the BS they are literally getting away with murder.
Thank heavens for The Dworkin Report, HCR, Meidas team, Katie Phang and the many, many other warriors out there fighting hard.
The headlines can feel relentless, but the coalition of journalists, legal advocates, and grassroots organizers pushing back every single day gives us hope. Thank you for standing with us!
Yet trump’s approval rating among Republicans remains steady between 75% and 85%. While his overall national approval has fallen, his core partisan base remains resilient. “Stupid is as stupid as does”
You will never change that base, that is the cult!!!
Completely correct. The only way to change a maggot is the following
#1 - they die a lot of them are old white guys prone to heart issues)
#2 - make the cost of living rise so much that food is out of reach (see #1), or
#3 raise the cost of gas so far as to preclude that drive to the polls to vote.
And you can’t fix stupid!!
We shall see….. they hate losers remember
Unfortunately, these bumbling fascists (trump in particular) control everything. It's very difficult to go up against a person who says he can do anything he wants and is supported by Congress and the Senate. He controls the military as is evidenced by the occupation of DC. It was a beautiful city, but it sounds more like an occupied war zone with all of the military and fences.
Don't for get the bought-and-paid for SCOTUS
as well as the park service and those in charge of preserving our national forests and places of historical significance. A bit off topic but speaking of historical buildings: I listened to a Rachel Maddow podcast. Did you know that Obama "secretly "built a bunker, 60 feet beneath the ground. So why is the East Wing destroyed? for a ballroom needed for national security-to build a another bunker-trump's very own bunker.
Because Obama built it, trump has to destroy it. Just like anything else Obama accomplished. trump can't handle a black guy who is much more accomplished, smarter, and better looking than he is.
I had forgotten about the Obama bunker. There was news coverage, so Obama's wasn't really secret. There was also one built during Roosevelt's administration. They both served a purpose. Rump is a toddler with Legos and the US Treasury. He didn't have to destroy the East Wing he did it because he could. And what good is something underground that no one can see; it wouldn't be a glorious monument to himself. Europe & Russia have fabulous buildings and he didn't want to look like he came from the cheap seats.
Now you're rollin! It is a Maghat Cluster spinning round and round as they go down the drain We may need several pounds of Drano to clear the clog!
We need a snake. The irony would be epic, given Donnie's beloved snake story.
When I heard him tell the story, I was confused. Why would he tell a story about himself-one of betrayal.
The demon is pure evil. He is a FAKE human being.
He was equating a woman who took in a snake out of compassion to "bleeding heart liberals" who want to take in immigrants. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSrOXvoNLwg]
