Election experts and tech firms are bracing for a flood of artificial intelligence-fueled deepfakes, coupled with a torrent of more traditional mis- and disinformation efforts, in these final hours of the 2024 election. “The most perilous moment will come, I think, 48 hours before the election,” Microsoft President Brad Smith warned the Senate Intelligence Committee at a hearing earlier this fall. Shortly after that hearing, Congress took the entire month of October off without addressing the quietly building storm that we’re now in the throes of, including from foreign actors intent on sowing discord into American elections. “People think it's campaign against campaign, not necessarily,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) told Raw Story. “It may well be foreign entities.” With few federal guardrails in place to combat deepfakes and chatbot armies, in the last days of this election, federal officials are leaning on the private sector and states to fight AI-infused fakes, lies and misleading information. And experts are warning voters to be on guard and question everything they see online.       'You won't escape': Ex-Trump lawyer issues warning to MAGA fans excerpt:  A former general counsel to the Department of Homeland Security during Donald Trump's administration took to social media to caution voters over what he witnessed from inside the former administration. Writing in a thread on X Sunday night, John Mitnick said, "I was a senior, Senate-confirmed appointee in the Trump administration. I saw it from the inside. It was a chaotic disaster. I am also a lifelong conservative, a former Republican nominee for Congress, and a former White House Counsel." While he agrees with the many who have come forward to talk about Trump as "reckless, angry, vengeful, and narcissistic," he added an additional argument. "Perhaps you recognize Trump’s many serious flaws, but you think you will benefit from some of his “policies” while escaping the effects of the chaos and lawlessness," wrote Mitnick. No one will escape, he argued. "Although Trump will tend to follow Project 2025 (a problem in itself), you can’t trust him to implement any particular policy. Trump has no political principles. He will reverse any position any time if it suits his personal interest. Surely you’ve already noticed that," Mitnick continued. "You won’t escape the disastrous effects of his policies (e.g., tariffs) on the economy, global instability and damage to national security resulting from his admiration for foreign dictators, or the chaos, lawlessness, and persecution that he promises. No one will," he promised. "I disagree with Kamala Harris on many issues, but she will respect our constitutional system and the rule of law, and she will support our international alliances and allies. She has also pledged to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet," said Mitnick. Chris Murphy (D-CT) pushed back against Fox News host Brian Kilmeade after he attacked Vice President Kamala Harris and her policies. During an interview on Monday, Kilmeade criticized Harris over undocumented immigration. "Donald Trump killed that bill, right?" Murphy asked. "Even though it was supported by conservative Republicans on the border patrol." "I don't know," Kilmeade claimed. "But I'm just saying this idea that people don't know what Kamala Harris is for on immigration is just not true," Murphy noted. "She's going to get to immigration that Donald Trump opposes." Kilmeade then asserted that crime was up under the Biden-Harris administration. But Murphy was ready for him. "Crime shot up when Donald Trump was president," Murphy said. "At the end of Donald Trump's presidency, we were less safe. Crime has come down under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris." "You got to be kidding me," Kilmeade gasped. "Who's tougher on crime, Trump or her?" "But look at the data, right?" Murphy insisted. "Crime has come down. We have 20 percent fewer urban homicides." "They revamped their crime stats, and they went up to 4.2% increase," Kilmeade argued. "That's not true," the senator pointed out. "Urban gun homicides have come down in this country by 20 percent."
