After Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his Republican legislators banned abortion in Florida after 6 weeks (at which point woman may not even know they're pregnant), 900,000 Floridians sign a petition to get abortion rights on the ballot as a constitutional amendment, designated Amendment 4. A pro-choice group called Floridians Protecting Freedom created a TV ad supporting Amendment 4. The commercial plainly and inarguable constituted political speech protected by the First Amendment. Nevertheless, DeSantis and his governmental henchmen issued cease and desist letters to 50 TV stations, threatening them with prosecution if they aired the pro-Amendment 4 commercial. Floridians Protecting Freedom filed suit in federal court seeking a restraining order prohibiting the state of Florida from violating their free speech rights. A federal judge granted the request for a restraining order, pointedly informing DeSantis of the following in his written ruling" " Too keep it simple for the State of Florida: it's the First Amendment, stupid." This video discusses the numerous legal developments at play in DeSantis's unconstitutional attempt to violate then free speech rights of the people of Florida.
