Tonight I’d planned to write about the decisions in two voting cases, United States v. Virginia (the court ordered the commonwealth to restore a large group of voters purged from the voter rolls during the “quiet period” ahead of the election, when that is prohibited) and RNC v. Wetzel (the Fifth Circuit, in an opinion that probably won’t affect this election but could have long legs for future ones, ruled that a Mississippi law that permits counting of mail-in absentee ballots as long as they’re postmarked by election day and received within five business days of the election violates the election day rule set by Congress). I’d also planned to take up Trump’s response to the Special Counsel’s opening brief in the Eleventh Circuit case, where Smith is asking the court to reinstate the classified documents case that Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed. But like many of y’all, I suspect, I seem to have a case of pre-election jitters. So I hope you won’t mind if I take the night off—I’ve made dinner reservations with my sweet husband.
Kamala Harris is running a near immaculate campaign given the times we live in, discussing policy with intelligence and candor and coming across as genuine and full of integrity. It's incredible that she’s not up by 30 points in the polls against the convicted felon, but I’m still optimistic. Nonetheless, the next couple of weeks will likely be rough on all of us, and I’m going to take a little stand here in favor of indulging in some self-care.
Donald Trump, in the meantime, is telling women to forget about abortion. This is a post he made on truth social Saturday morning.
Nothing matters to Trump except for Trump. So, of course, women’s rights to make decisions about their own bodies are irrelevant to him. His VP pick, JD Vance, is on record supporting a national ban on abortion. With Trump increasingly showing signs of slippage, anyone who is voting should contemplate how long a second Trump presidency would last and what that would mean for American women as Trump tries to soften his stance on the issue heading into the final days of the election
But I don’t want to leave you with just that tonight, so I’ll share a chicken picture.
I’m very popular because I’m the one with the handful of mealworms.
We’re in this together,
Joyce
