The largest progressive gathering in the country, Netroots Nation is being held in Pittsburgh right now.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak at the opening keynote on how Democrats can stand up to the GOP’s Fear-For-Profit and corporate super PACs through solidarity — through this year’s midterms and beyond.
Right now, the Democratic party is fractured. A fact that puts our very Democracy at risk. We must come together to create a party that unapologetically pushes for bold, progressive policy that works for the poor, the working class, for Black and brown communities, to earn the trust of voters.
During my primary election, our team watched as corporate interests and super PACs spent millions of dollars to try and tank our people-led, grassroots campaign.
Some would say that the only way to fight back against these special interests is to take corporate PAC money, but we chose to run a campaign that created a multi-generational, multi-racial movement: building power together, centering the voices and experiences of those most impacted, and refusing to compromise for corporate donors.
And we won.
Our primary win in March is the model to prove progressives can win anywhere without compromising working class values and if Democratic leadership stands up to the influence and control of Republican-aligned corporate PACs.
At the end of the day, our message is a winning one. Because Pittsburgh can show you that our real power is in our collective, our boldness, and our solidarity: they won’t be able to stop us.
