We fund voter protection
Last year, as part of a ridiculous effort to tighten election laws, Texas Republicans passed a bill requiring people who register to vote using a post office box to provide proof of a home address to ensure that they vote only in eligible elections.
Immediately after it passed, the Texas chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens and Voto Latino sued to overturn it, arguing that it is discriminatory and would create unnecessary barriers to voting.
Their complaint says the bill “targets young and minority voters to silence their voices and ensure that their collective voting strength does not translate to political power or accountability.”
Then last week, a Texas federal judge struck down the law because it is “unconstitutionally vague and overbroad, barring conduct that is squarely protected by the First Amendment.”
We couldn’t be happier to see this news.
We’re seeing restrictive and discriminatory voting laws popping up all over the place. But every time one of these laws gets struck down, it’s a win for democracy.
But we can’t rest. Republicans in states across the country are still working tirelessly to find every possible route for voter suppression. And we’ve got to stay one step ahead of them.
We’ve got a plan to do just that. We’re funding voter protection staff in battleground states – including in Texas! – to help voters overcome barriers to voting.
Thank you for being part of our team,
Power the Vote
We Fund Voter Protection In 2020, we ran the Democratic Party’s Voter Protection Program in Georgia, when the state flipped blue for the first time in nearly 30 years. We pioneered a new model of voter protection, built on sustained investments and long-lasting relationships. Now, we’re building on that success and adapting the Georgia model to fight voter suppression in other states.
