Tucker Carlson and the vicious face of right-wing media

Tucker Carlson is a vicious racist and xenophobic demagogue. In the realm of evening cable news, he’s among the loudest purveyors of Trump’s "Big Lie" propaganda. He’s compared COVID-19 vaccine mandates to "Nazi experiments."

Always feigning circumspection and high-minded innocence, he’s a sinister drummer in the march toward fascism, backed by billionaires and corporate paymasters.

But Tucker Carlson has the top rated cable news show on television, and as long as he’s making money for those who underwrite his nightly performance, he’ll stay on the air.

This is the logic of the corporate news industry: Journalistic ethics don’t matter. Facts don’t matter. The damage done to democracy doesn’t matter. What matters is ratings and profits. And most important overall: the corporate-friendly spin to the masses is the real prize.

This is why independent, nonprofit journalism is so essential to the survival of democracy—and why it’s seen as such a threat to the powerful.

As news outlets that challenge the corporate establishment go under, fascist forces are on the rise.

Quality journalism in the public interest and dedicated to the common good is both the antithesis and the antidote to a media system built on division, misinformation, and hatred.

If you believe in the power of independent journalism to hold power to account and its importance in helping to build a better world, please support Common Dreams today.

In these challenging times, we need you more than ever.

With solidarity and gratitude,
