Nearly every day there is a frightening new story about how Big Tech companies are losing control of the technology they are developing, with potentially cataclysmic results.
As I’m sure you heard Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic employee, resigned last week and said that the very people building this technology admit that it could threaten the future of humanity.
Nobel Prize winner and the Godfather of AI Dr. Geoffrey Hinton says it is not an unreasonable estimate to suggest there's a 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within a decade.
What Mr. Coxon, Dr. Hinton and others sounding the alarm are talking about is that these major AI companies are building technologies that they do not fully understand, will likely become smarter than humans and could very well escape human control. No. This is not the script of a bad science fiction movie. It’s the reality facing us today.
Meanwhile, we have a President of the United States who seems to know absolutely nothing about AI and its dangers, and who believes that the best way forward is to do nothing.
Further, we have a Congress - including both Democrats and Republicans - that has seen this issue coming for years and has failed to act accordingly.
Not surprisingly, all of this is happening under the umbrella of a corrupt campaign finance system and an AI industry that is prepared to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to stop any kind of sensible legislation.
That is the bad news. And it’s pretty bad.
The good news ... and there is some... is that the American people and some members of Congress have woken up over the past year. A lot has happened since Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and I introduced legislation 6 months ago calling for a moratorium on the construction of data centers.
Interestingly, given the very partisan nature of politics today, concerns about AI and data centers are shared by people across the political spectrum.
A recent poll indicated that eighty-one percent of Americans believe Congress isn't doing enough to regulate AI. And they’re right. We're talking about a majority of Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike.
If we’re going to protect humanity from the dangers of AI, here’s what I think we have to do.
First, we need a pause on advanced AI development until a new federal AI regulatory body is up and running and has established clear rules and a model review process to ensure safe and secure development of this technology. In addition, we need a complete ban on artificial superintelligence – an AI mind smarter than any human and capable of operating independently beyond our control.
But none of this can just happen in the United States alone. There must be international cooperation. That is why I am doing all that I can to see that President Trump and President Xi of China negotiate an AI treaty when they soon meet.
I know there are many who think that is impossible. It’s not. Back in the 1980s, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union, two people with very different political and ideological positions, understood that a nuclear war would not be good for either country or the rest of the world - and they reached a nuclear arms agreement. Trump and Xi can do the same.
So, in the midst of all this craziness, what can each of us do?
We can get involved in these mid-term elections in a way that we’ve never done before. If this campaign is about anything, it is about standing up to the Oligarchs who control our economy, our media and our political system. It’s about standing up to the Big Tech multi-billionaires who are prepared to take humanity down a very dangerous path in order to gain even more wealth and power.
As progressives, we are supporting a number of great candidates for the Senate and House who have the courage to do just that. And I will be doing everything I can to see they get elected. In the next six weeks I intend to be in Michigan, Minnesota, Florida, Wisconsin, California and elsewhere.
I know that I don’t have to remind you that we are now living in an unprecedented and dangerous moment in American history. We cannot allow Republicans to continue to control the U.S. House and U.S. Senate and rubber-stamp Trump’s disastrous agenda. We need change, real change.
Let’s go forward together.
Not just me.
Us.
That is, was, and will always be the only way forward.
Let's get it done.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
👋 Before you go... 👋
Bernie Sanders is once again asking your financial support...
Over the next several weeks Bernie is going to be fighting for our progressive agenda and working hard to elect progressive candidates all over this country who have the guts not only to stand up to Trumpism, but to take on the monied interests of both parties and fight for a working class that has been ignored for far too long.
