I was seven years old when I fled my village in South Sudan. Soldiers had attacked, and I ran. I thought I'd be home by that evening.
That didn't happen for almost 20 years. Today, millions of children are fleeing the same type of violence I did.
As a former refugee and a board member of USA for UNHCR — I'm personally asking you to make a gift today for our first-ever UN Refugee Giving Day.
Right now, every monthly gift is DOUBLED for the first three months
When I fled violence as a child, I walked for three months to reach safety. Many of the children I walked with didn't survive. I went days without eating. Rice and beans were a luxury, if you could get your hands on them.
But I kept going. And along the way, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, protected me and gave me a chance to rebuild. Eventually, I went to school, earned a degree, and built a life I never could have imagined as that seven-year-old boy.
Today, UNHCR is delivering shelter, food, and protection to families forced to flee in Sudan, Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan and beyond. And right now, escalating crises and deep funding cuts are making that work more urgent than ever.
I still think about the meals I missed as a child. A gift of just $30 (doubled to $60 for the first three months through our Giving Day match) can provide a kitchen set of cooking and serving utensils to two refugee families, each month. For a family who fled with nothing, that means being able to prepare a meal together. I know from experience how much that matters.
On April 30, our goal is to rally 2,026 donors for our first-ever UN Refugee Giving Day. You can be one of them — but you don't have to wait:
I didn't get to choose the war that took my childhood. But because people like you showed up, I got a future.
You can do that for someone else today.
With gratitude, |

P.S. Every monthly gift is DOUBLED right now for the first three months. Don't miss your chance to be an inaugural supporter of UN Refugee Giving Day, when your impact will go twice as far for refugee families. |
