PLEASE SPEAK OUT AND OPPOSE THE SAVE ACT IN THE SENATE TO PROTECT
VOTING RIGHTS!
PROTECT MAIL-IN VOTING!
This week, Donald Trump's biggest allies in the U.S. Senate are making their push to pass the SAVE Act, despite the inevitable filibuster from Democrats. Sign and send a letter to your members of U.S. senators opposing the SAVE Act, which would impose significant new documentation requirements when registering to vote. Additionally, in its current form, the SAVE Act would all but eliminate mail-in voting. (Note: Sending these letters may result in receiving emails from allied Democratic and progressive organizations. For frequently asked questions about letter campaigns such as these, please see the notes below this email.) According to The Hill, this is the big week for the fight over the SAVE Act in the U.S. Senate: President Trump’s allies are planning to take over the Senate floor this week in a bid to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, setting up a major test for Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), who is under pressure from Trump and the MAGA base to extend the debate over voting reform for as long as possible. The plan, as near as I can tell, is for Republicans to hold the floor of the chamber for as long as possible, and block all other business, until the SAVE Act passes. Fortunately, they are highly unlikely to succeed. The basic problem faced by Donald Trump and his hardest core supporters when it comes to the SAVE Act is two-fold:
As this fight unfolds this week, it would be very helpful if senators were hearing from their constituents who are opposed to the SAVE Act, and indeed to any attempts to make it more difficult for Americans to exercise their right to vote. If you would like more information about what the SAVE Act is and why it is a bad idea, I recommend this explainer from the Bipartisan Policy Center. Sign and send a letter to your members of U.S. senators opposing the SAVE Act, which would impose significant new documentation requirements when registering to vote. Additionally, in its current form, the SAVE Act would all but eliminate mail-in voting. Thank you for your time, Chris Bowers Founder, Bowers News Media Notes on letter campaigns: –You may want to slightly alter the subject line and letter text, so as to better help your message in being received by your members of Congress. –You do not have to use the pre-written letter. You can also write your own letter, if you wish. –In order to send your letter, you will have to choose a topic. However, topic lists are maintained by each congressional office, and thus I do not know which topics you will have to choose from. You will have to use your best judgement. –After you send your letters, you will be redirected to an ActBlue page for Bowers Kerbel Media, the organization that operates both the Bowers News Media news and activism email list, and the Wolves and Sheep political analysis and practical life advice Substack. However, no donation is required, and if you see this page your letters have already been sent. *** About Bowers News Media is a one-person grassroots activism email list, run by me, Chris Bowers, a 20-year veteran of online progressive politics at Daily Kos, Open Left and MyDD. I write all of the emails myself, in an honest, measured, personal voice, citing all of my sources and avoiding exaggeration. I aim to bring you the most efficient activism operation around, almost entirely free of overhead, and to always remain accessible to you by reading every single email you send me (and replying to most of them). Wolves and Sheep is a Substack run by Matthew Kerbel, a political science professor of over 30 years at Villanova University. Matt brings you timely, outside the beltway analysis of our national politics, informed by history and social science, to help you make sense of what often feels like an out-of-control world. Together, we run the Bowers Kerbel Media collaboration, a joint effort between Bowers News Media and Wolves and Sheep. Matt and I are old friends, and even wrote a book together about a decade ago. | ||
