He has spent the last six months in a notoriously brutal Israeli prison where he awaits a hearing simply for being accused of throwing rocks – accusations his family denies.
The indefinite detention of a child is monstrous. As an American citizen, Mohammed should be able to count on his government to help.
But when Mohammed’s family went looking for assistance, they found none.
They alerted their Republican congressman in their home district in Florida, who referred them to the state department, which only said that the US embassy in Israel was “following standard procedures”.
Embassy staff have been allowed to perform welfare checks, where they learned that Mohammed had lost an unhealthy amount of weight and had caught scabies. But despite these clearly inhumane conditions, nothing has been done.
Palestinian-Americans are still American citizens, despite the constant racism and discrimination that they face. Mohammed’s government should be fighting tooth and nail to get him out of this indefinite detention and reunite him with his family.
That’s why it’s up to us, the people in this movement who believe in the dignity of Palestinians and oppose Israel’s cruel treatment of kids like Mohammed, to help Ilhan apply diplomatic pressure.
