One of the interesting things is that economists interpreted consumer spending as 'consumer confidence.' Rather it would seem that those who were financially able stocked up on imported things they knew would be unavailable. WE DID! We cautioned friends to do the same. While I'm the first to complain about CHEAP CHINESE CRAP that doesn't last, is defective out of the box, there are too few American manufacturers offering those products. A plumber installed a water heater - copper fittings split at the seam. 3 electrical switches - CHINESE MADE - FAILED! Who ever heard of ELECTRICAL SWITCHES failing? We wanted to buy a DISHWASHER - read the reviews. Cheap Chinese Crap failed on installation. Who do you return it to? You don't! For LAWN ORNAMENTS & disposable items, the CHEAP CHINESE CRAP makes sense...nothing else! BATTERIES? They're made in CHINA! MASSACHUSETTS changed their SMOKE DETECTOR CODE - batteries are supposed to last 5 YEARS? Don't believe it! We replaced BATTERIES that didn't last ONE YEAR!
