Elon Musk said he would slash at least $2 trillion as the head of Trump's so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE).1
Now it's becoming clear how he plans to do it: By gutting Social Security.
Last week, Musk retweeted a thread from Republican Senator Mike Lee that laid out a blueprint for dismantling Social Security, adding the comment "interesting thread."2
Then on Thursday, Musk went to Capitol Hill, and top congressional leaders reported that "they're going to put everything on the table," including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.3

Elon Musk is the richest person in the world, and he spent at least $277 million to help put Donald Trump in the White House.4
Trump is rewarding Musk by putting him in charge of DOGE, a commission that will recommend a purported $2 trillion in cuts to the federal budget.
And how does Musk plan to use his newfound powers? Destroy Social Security and Medicare in order to give himself even more tax breaks and government handouts.
It's not just Social Security that's in the crosshairs. Musk also said he would completely eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the agency created after the 2008 financial crash to protect consumers from predatory financial practices.5
He's also called for defunding Planned Parenthood, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and other "unauthorized" federal spending, like veterans' health care.6,7
Demand Progress has successfully helped defeat past attempts to cut Social Security by mobilizing tens of thousands of people to contact Congress. Now, with Elon Musk, the wealthiest person in the world attacking Social Security, we need to do even more.
With gratitude,
The team at Demand Progress Action
