Welcome to Today’s American News: Syria News is American News Edition. Wowza, there is a lot going on in Damascus. Syria dominates today’s headlines for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and pop culture.
Assad is GONE, Russia bolts, and even Trump thinks Putin looks weak AF… "There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen," a famous Soviet once said. For more than thirteen years, nothing happened to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as his Russia-sponsored crimes against humanity ended 600,000 Syrian lives in violence. Nothing happened to Assad, that is, until yesterday, when the advance of rebel factions ended his reign of terror. Is he dead? Did he flee to Russia? Reports vary. Vladimir Putin gets a massive “L” for this one as Russian civilians and military personnel gathered up what they could and took the road out of Damascus. More than a PR embarrassment, Putin loses a strategic airfield used for Wagner Group’s desecration in Africa–AND Russia’s only naval port on the Mediterranean Sea. None other than Donald Trump called out Putin for being weak AF, derailing the Russian war criminal’s attempt to convey strength in advance of any negotiations seeking to end his “3-day special military operation”.
Syria’s future is dire but Biden offers blueprint and orders strikes on ISIS… In the wake of great news out of Syria for anyone who doesn’t like it when 600,000 people die so one man can keep his job comes an ominous reality: No one has any idea wtf happens next. The rebel factions who ousted Assad largely hate-hate-hate one another. Absent norms like regular elections and a line of succession, and with no functioning government at present, this could get messy as hell. President Biden stepped in to offer the Syrian people a potential blueprint for its future. Biden also ordered air raids on ISIS targets in the country–because an unchecked ISIS will absolutely expand its power in some form. Chaos is a latter, even for terrorists.
Trump meets with Macron and Zelenskyy in Paris… It was a masterstroke in diplomacy and prestige from a global leader who could use a boost at home. French President Emanuel Macron invited Donald Trump to Paris for the full re-opening of the iconic Notre Dame cathedral with all restorations complete after a major fire. (Call us sacrilege if you must but our sense is that Jesus would want that $800 million in restoration costs to feed the poor instead.) Macron also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky; all reports indicate a successful ménage à trois. More bad news for Putin.
FBI has “person of interest” in UnitedHealth CEO murder and the gays just weighed in and they literally CANNOT… News outlets continue to cover this murder more than the president-elect saying he wants to overturn birthright citizenship. They do realize Americans are murdered every day in America, right? Here’s a new angle for them… the FBI isn’t the only group with “interest” in this person because gay men (and women) on Twitter are losing their DAMN MINDS over the “heart throb” identified as 26-year old Luigi Mangione. Personally, I think there is something very strange about people lusting over a mentally unstable suspected killer.
Today’s Buzz
The end of an Era(s Tour)... Taylor Swift is a national treasure and she just keeps outdoing herself. If you saw her in one or more of her 149 Eras Tour performances spanning 50+ cities and five continents, we are J-E-A-L-O-U-S. Alas, eras are not forever, and her performance last evening was the last of a 21-month tour known for its friendship bracelets, record-breaking sales, and “surprise songs” at each event. Never stop what you’re doing, Tay-Tay.
Today’s Furry Friend
A reader submission, here’s Sophia (big spoon) and Rose (little spoon) taking a nap. Yes, they are named after the Golden Girls and they even have a friend named Blanche.
This was a fun one, folks! Until tomorrow evening, this is Today’s American News, signing off.
