Today marks a major win for our work together! Moving forward, financial institutions in California have the tools they need to correctly label gun stores whenever a purchase is made to help detect and deter gun crime. Here’s why this is such a huge deal: We recently published research that found dozens of gun crimes — from fraud to terrorism to mass shootings — were committed using credit cards in the last 5 years alone. This was thanks, in part, to a special exception that classified gun stores with generic codes, allowing them to fly under the radar of standard detection systems that banks rely on to prevent fraud and crime. You helped us pressure the credit card companies to establish a code for gun stores in 2022. Today, we finally get to see it implemented.

Why has it taken two years to get this code implemented? Paranoid, misinformed pushback from red states, many of which are abusing legislation to ban the use of the code which caused credit card companies to pause the rollout. California pushed through, thanks to pressure from consumers and our coalition. That's right — you hold the power and look what happens when we come together to put it to use! We're looking forward to many states following suit to keep their citizens safer by putting gun stores under the same scrutiny as every other retailer.
