Oreos: double-stuffed with rainforest destruction and human rights abuses
Mondelēz International — the famous maker of Oreo and Chips Ahoy — is hosting a conference TODAY to talk about how the snacking industry can improve its approach to human rights and sustainability. In fact, they’re recently released their “Snacking Made Right” report to tout their progress.
But here’s the thing, they’re the poster child for snacking done WRONG! Their cookies and snacks are actually taking a bite out of our rainforests. That’s right, their famous Oreos are double stuffed with deforestation and human rights abuses.
We gave Mondelēz a quick and easy blueprint for cleaning up their destruction-filled supply chains a long time ago, and guess what? Fancy, catered sustainability conferences stuffed with greenwashing weren’t part of the plan.
Mondelēz’ supply chain has Conflict Palm Oil at the center — one of the biggest drivers of deforestation and human rights violations globally. And the biggest and baddest producer that Mondelēz needs to drop is Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), a notorious Indonesian agribusiness with a mile-long rapsheet of natural destruction and human rights violations.
Breaking up with RGE should be an easy slam dunk, but that’s where the cookie crumbles for Mondelēz’ money-hungry executives.
If Mondelēz and other industry players want to get together and gab about sustainability around a fancy conference room table, they should talk about what’s been staring Mondelēz in the face all along:
