The portion of state revenue that comes from federal funds usually ranges from about a quarter to a third. However, Medicaid support, COVID-19 funds, and other federal aid during the pandemic pushed that to a new high.
Many states expect continued budget surpluses, thanks largely to the American Rescue Plan, 2021 in-frastructure law, and other federal investments. But what will happen when those one-time funds stop flowing?
