Humane Society Legislative Fund: Help give animals a voice in the Massachusetts legislature

Dog and american flag

In every legislative session, we at Humane Society Legislative Fund find ourselves up against well-funded, thoroughly self-interested foes, who allow the horrific cruelty towards animals to rage on in our nation.

The trophy hunting groups, factory farmers, puppy mill lobbyists, and others who let animals suffer to expand their profits, will spend millions of dollars and countless hours to help elect certain candidates—candidates they know will get right to work for them once they take their seats in government.

This is why pro-animal candidates need—and deserve—a dedicated and tireless force behind them, too. And the Humane Society Legislative Fund’s Massachusetts political action committee is that force.

It has never been more important that we provide direct support to those who recognize that animals deserve dignity, love, and care—and who have the power to make dynamic change.

Every day, elected officials make decisions that affect the fate of animals. The dogs suffering in puppy mills, the mink still bred to become fur coats, and the rabbits subjected to frightful, outdated lab testing–they rely on “humane candidates” who will recognize and speak for them in office, and who need constant support.

In December of 2021, Governor Baker signed into law a landmark upgrade for egg-laying hens in Massachusetts to live cage-free lives. Four legislators—Aaron Michlewitz, Karen Spilka, Michael Rodrigues, and Ronald Mariano—were especially crucial to the bill’s success, fighting to open doors, garner support, and get the bill to the Governor’s desk. Throughout the year, HSLF worked with and stood behind these champions—using our PAC to support their election campaigns.

This session, there is a promising initiative to prohibit the use of wild animals in cruel, outdated traveling acts. HSLF can stand behind those humane champions fighting to make it a reality, but we cannot do it without your support. Together, we can give animals the voice they so desperately need in government, through our Massachusetts PAC.

The 2024 elections may feel far off, but until then, every day is important. We each feel the need to stand up against those who wish to harm the most vulnerable among us – but when we stand together, we become a powerful coalition that they cannot ignore.

At HSLF we put animals first, and we need strong voices and dedicated fighters on both sides of the aisle to get the job done. With your help, we can take back our state and federal governments, by supporting and electing humane candidates. Please help give animal protection the fighting chance it needs, through a gift to our Massachusetts political action committee!

Sincerely,

Sara Amundson
