In recent months, we’ve seen a horrifying uptick in gun violence. Mass shootings are happening almost weekly, sometimes daily. We saw yet more terrifying acts of violence unfold at July 4 celebrations over the weekend as parade goers fled for their lives. These events are almost numbing in their alarming frequency. Our children should not fear for their lives going to school or attending a parade. Congress just finally passed a bipartisan bill closing dangerous loopholes and making it harder for certain individuals to quickly get a gun. But I'm going to be honest, it's simply not enough. Not nearly. The Senate’s bill is a step in the right direction, but only a step. We must keep pushing for more. Our children, teachers, friends, and family members are still losing their lives from this scourge — and deadly assault weapons like the AR-15 are still being sold across the country. All because the majority of Senate Republicans value guns more than the lives of our kids. We can — and must — do more: Universal background checks. Reinstating the federal assault weapons ban. Taking the fight directly to the gun lobby by repealing their blanket legal immunity — the list goes on. These are proven ways to reduce the number of lives lost to shootings in our country, and I refuse to give up and stop fighting until more action is taken. I know you do, too.
Thank you for taking a stand with us in the fight for our children and families. It could not be more important. — Adam Schiff |
