Lessons learned from the fight for marriage equality

 

When I co-founded Guns Down America in 2016, we developed a strategy that centered on corporate pressure – pushing American businesses to embrace our issue and use their immense leverage to help shift the cultural perception of gun violence prevention. This methodology comes straight from the fight for marriage equality.   Seven years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to marry applies to same-sex couples. This ruling required all 50 states to recognize these unions with all the accompanying rights and responsibilities. Just two days ago, when the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas hinted that the landmark Obergefell decision could be next on the chopping block.   In the latest episode of Circle Back with Igor Volsky, I talk to Evan Wolfson, an attorney and activist who played a key role in the movement for marriage equality. Our wide-ranging conversation takes a deep dive into his work, his methods, and how they can translate to the gun violence prevention (GVP) movement.
