Lessons learned from the fight for marriage equality
When I co-founded Guns Down America in 2016, we developed a strategy that centered on corporate pressure – pushing American businesses to embrace our issue and use their immense leverage to help shift the cultural perception of gun violence prevention. This methodology comes straight from the fight for marriage equality.
Seven years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to marry applies to same-sex couples. This ruling required all 50 states to recognize these unions with all the accompanying rights and responsibilities. Just two days ago, when the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas hinted that the landmark Obergefell decision could be next on the chopping block.
In these dark times, I hope you’re able to find some level of comfort and inspiration in our conversation about this unique moment in American history. In our fight for a safer, more progressive America it’s important to look to our allies who focus on all these truly intersectional issues. We can learn so much from their successes and their failures.
