Ocasio-Cortez’s dire warning

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just issued a stark warning, saying there's a "very real risk" the United States will no longer be a democracy a decade from now.

Based on the response on cable TV news, one would think she had said something shockingly controversial.

But AOC is absolutely right.

In 2021, Trump’s GOP used phony voter fraud conspiracy theories to pass laws that make it harder to vote in at least 19 states. This year, they are moving past voter suppression and on to election nullification, with pro-Trump candidates running for secretary of state in Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, and Michigan—key battleground states where they will have the power to challenge or even throw out election results.

Our democracy is on the brink of collapse, threatened by a rising movement of right-wing authoritarians who are willing to go to any length—including violent insurrection—to seize power.

The year ahead could very well determine whether AOC’s dire warning will come true, and Common Dreams is doubling down on our hard-hitting progressive journalism to not only report the news, but also to provide citizens with the information and inspiration to stand up and fight back.

We rely on reader donations to fund our nonprofit model of journalism. Will you chip in $27, or whatever you can afford, to help us meet our Winter Fundraising Campaign goal by March 1?
