As confirmed coronavirus cases continue to skyrocket, and with the most important election of our lifetimes less than four months away, it’s absolutely imperative that voters are able to make their voices heard while protecting their health this November. And we can do that by making sure every voter has a vote-by-mail option.
But Republicans in the Senate and the White House are fighting tooth and nail to stop Americans from voting. President Trump and his sycophants on Fox News have spent the last few weeks pushing lies and baseless attacks on the notion of vote-by-mail, even though Trump himself is one of the millions of Americans who votes by mail himself.
Trump has been saying the quiet part out loud — he doesn’t think that he or other Republicans can get elected if more Americans vote. So he is doing everything he can to discourage exercise of the franchise. Just look at this tweet from him last week:
Here are the facts: voting by mail is safe and secure – absentee voters, including President Trump himself and many of his top aides, have been doing it for decades.
And Republicans know it! While they vilify mail-in ballots all over TV and social media, the truth is an RNC robocall voiced by Lara Trump has been reassuring their Republican supporters that vote-by-mail is “safe and secure” and encouraging them to utilize it.
Look, we know voting by mail is safe, and it’s the best option we have to ensure voters don’t have to put their health at risk while waiting in long lines at crowded polling places like people in Georgia and Wisconsin were forced to do during the primaries this spring.
We need a nationwide vote-by-mail option for every voter, and fast. Add your name to my petition demanding Mitch McConnell and the GOP Senate get out of the way of efforts to help states prepare for vote-by-mail ASAP.
