Yesterday, in a LIVE debate, the moderator asked Becca and her Republican opponent about the war in Iran, and things got interesting fast. 👀 The moderator noted that Congress has held 20 war powers votes since the war began, and that diesel in Vermont is now $6.38 a gallon, up from under $4 just a year ago. Becca said what she hears from farmers and small business owners all over the state is that the war is driving up fuel costs, and it has to end. She called it an illegal and unwarranted war, and reminded everyone that SHE brought a war powers resolution to the House floor back in April. Then the moderator asked her opponent a simple question: would you have voted yes or no on the War Powers Resolution? Her opponent’s answer: "I don't know exactly what that War Powers Resolution is." The moderator asked again for a yes or no, explaining it would effectively take away President Trump's ability to continue military action in Iran without congressional approval…and he still couldn’t give an answer. The war wasn't the only place the two of them split. On healthcare, the moderator pointed out that Vermonters pay some of the highest premiums in the country. Becca said rural hospitals tell her it's Medicaid that keeps their doors open, and that the $1 trillion cut to Medicaid in the Republican tax bill has made things worse, with tens of thousands of Vermonters facing the loss of their healthcare.  Becca said the government should be able to negotiate prescription drug prices, that pharmacy benefit managers need to get out of the picture, and that on the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee, she's going after the monopolies that have cornered parts of the healthcare market. Her opponent said he's not in favor of universal healthcare and wants the government out of intervening in healthcare. The very telling part is that Medicaid didn't even come up in his answer.  Here’s the thing: Ballots are already in Vermonters' hands, and Election Day is 25 days away. A great debate is a good start, but what wins is the work after it like reaching voters, organizing, and helping Democrats win back the House! Vermont deserves a Congresswoman with common sense, a whole lot of fight, and working knowledge of the job, like actually knowing what a war powers resolution is.
