Another Monday, another Green Line shutdown. This one runs for nine days, now through Oct. 4, and shuttle buses will replace service between North Station and Kenmore (on the C and D branches), Babcock Street (on the B branch) and Heath Street (on the E branch) while crews work on signal upgrades in the central Green Line tunnel. The MBTA suggests using the Orange Line to go between Back Bay and North Station. A different kind of heated rivalry: It's official. The Boston Red Sox will face the New York Yankees in a best-of-three Wild Card Series this week. It's the seventh time these storied rivals have met up in the playoffs. Last year, the Yankees came out victorious, and they're favored to win the matchup again this year. But don't count out the Sox just yet: the team had an impressive turnaround this summer under new management . While there won't be any games at Fenway Park (they're all being played at Yankee Stadium), you can still watch from home on NBC or Peacock, or at your favorite sports bar. Here's when to tune in: Dropped calls: A group of SNAP recipients is suing Gov. Maura Healey's administration, arguing that staff shortages at the Department of Transitional Assistance have made it difficult — or impossible — to get food assistance. WBUR's Martha Bebinger reports that the lawsuit filed by the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, which is representing the group, alleges up to 81% of SNAP-related calls to the agency have been disconnected because the program is understaffed. It's a major issue because recipients are required to speak to a human representative to update their information or restore their benefits. "When the system it has set up for residents who are hungry is broken, residents are unlawfully denied the federal benefit they are eligible for," MLRI's Vicky Negus told Martha. - The DTA has reportedly hired 118 new caseworkers since January, and a spokesperson for the agency said there are plans to hire more. A hearing for a request on a preliminary injunction is scheduled for Tuesday, according to court records obtained by The Boston Globe.
Washed up: This weekend's nor'easter didn't just flood cities and disrupt baseball schedules. It also washed part of a 142-year-old shipwreck ashore. As the Nantucket Current first reported Saturday, a piece of the Warren Sawyer — a three-masted ship that wrecked off Nantucket in 1884 — washed up on one of the island's beaches. (Pieces from the ship also washed up on Nantucket in 2023.) Jascin Leonardo Finger, deputy director of Nantucket's Maria Mitchell Association, told WBUR's Paul Connearney what was uncovered this time appears to be the keel of the boat and its frame, which is in "remarkable condition" for its age. - On the mainland: This weekend's storm led to coastal erosion and some flooding in Barnstable County, "but nothing that's really beyond what we normally experience," Andrew Platt, emergency management director for the county, told Paul. Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch also told Paul that the city's newly heightened sea walls were a "tremendous" help during the storm.
