We recently turned out dozens of people for the September 14 Town of Wareham Planning Board public hearing on this very issue — but because of the huge response, the Board continued the hearing to September 28 and postponed its decision to give people more time to weigh in. This may be our last chance to convince the Planning Board to deny the permit and end this fiasco for good. RSVP for today's meeting Fearing Hill is an iconic natural land feature in Wareham next to the existing Fearing Hill Conservation Area of 114 acres and residential neighborhoods. The solar project will clearcut about 20 acres of prime forest on one of the highest points in Wareham that has documented ecological biodiversity and serves as a wildlife corridor and habitat. Historic and ancient ways trod by Indigenous people cross the hillside. The eastern side of the hill was preserved by the Town of Wareham and the Wareham Land Trust 25 years ago this month - now the western side is under attack. Since 2021 a solar developer has been fighting hard to clearcut and install about 20 acres of industrial solar on the hill — on steep slopes, upgradient of private wells, and stripping the soil, vegetation and forest in a way that disrupts natural stormwater patterns. The panels on the hill are about 250 feet from homes and clearing is almost to the edge of residential properties. This is not a good place for solar — and the Town knows it. The Planning Board denied it in 2025 and the Conservation Commission did too — but then changed its mind under pressure from the developer. The corporate solar developer is trying to convince the Board and the public they have no choice but to approve the project now — and now it's up to us to fight back. Wareham has already lost over 350 acres of forest to large industrial solar with several more projects in the pipeline. Enough is enough!
