Today, Faithful America is leading a national coalition of partner organizations demanding that Congress do its constitutional duty and protect children and families from ICE detention.   In less than 14 months of President Trump's second term, ICE detained more than 6,200 children -- including at least 500 babies and toddlers. More than 1,600 children were held beyond the court-set 20-day limit on child detention.   On an average day, ICE holds nearly 10 times as many children as it did during the final year of the previous administration.   These are children of God -- children Jesus welcomed, blessed, and placed at the center of his ministry. Yet ICE is expanding this cruel system.

In Alexandria, Louisiana, the England Economic and Industrial Development District has signed a contract to turn former military barracks at England Airpark into a 528-bed detention facility for children and families. Groundwater at the former Air Force base has contained extraordinarily high levels of toxic PFAS "forever chemicals." For months, this plan has drawn opposition from immigrant rights advocates, faith leaders, and community members. Residents have packed board meetings to demonstrate and demand that the contract be canceled.

Pastor Leigh Rachal, one of the local clergy opposing the facility, said it best: "We might disagree on some of the other minutiae of immigration policy. But not this. Nobody wants children to be detained." England Airpark is just one urgent example of a national moral crisis, and we need Congress to pay attention. Members of Congress have the legal authority to enter ICE detention facilities without advance notice, inspect conditions, and demand accountability. That authority is worthless if it goes unused. Faithful America is demanding that Congress use that authority -- and every oversight and funding tool available -- to protect children and families from ICE detention. Because every child is a child of God, and God calls us to love and protect children -- not lock them away. In the Gospel of Mark, some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could bless them. When the disciples scolded the parents for bothering Jesus, he was angry with his disciples.  "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it." - Mark 10:14b-15 Then Jesus took the children in his arms, placed his hands on their heads, and blessed them. That is why Faithful America and our national partners are demanding that Congress protect children and families from ICE detention. Every signature here calls on members of Congress to conduct immediate, unannounced inspections of facilities holding children and families -- and use every oversight and funding tool available to end child detention. Detaining children is not compassionate nor just. It is an abuse of government power -- and people of faith and conscience will not stand for it.
