Laurel Lee's office was responsible for screening who could vote. It approved them, mailed them voter cards, and then police arrested them for voting. She left for Congress instead.   Defiant Donkey Sep 26 Nathan Hart went to the DMV to change his license. A clerk asked if he wanted to register to vote. He said he was pretty sure he couldn’t, because he was a felon. The clerk told him to fill it out anyway, and if he couldn’t vote, the system would catch it. The system did not catch it. The state ran its checks, approved him, and mailed him a voter ID card. He used it. Two years later, police showed up and put him in handcuffs. They Were Arrested For Using What The State Sent Them Twenty people were arrested that day. They had been approved and issued a card by the state before they ever cast a ballot. The bodycam footage is on the internet. You can watch people in their own doorways asking the officers what they did wrong, because nobody had ever told them they had done anything. The cops did not understand it either. One officer, listening to Hart explain the DMV, told him: then there’s your defense. Another was recorded saying he had never seen these charges before in his entire life. They faced up to five years in prison for voting with a card the state mailed them. Whose Job Was It To Catch That? Hers. Laurel Lee was Secretary of State. She said so herself, on the record, in 2020: under state law it was her office’s responsibility to screen people with felony convictions and tell the counties who was ineligible. Her department had no central database to do it. By May 2020 it had a backlog of 85,000 people it still needed to check. Asked about it that October, she said people with past convictions who were on the rolls were eligible voters until they got removed. They were never removed. They were arrested. She resigned three months before the arrests to run for Congress. She has never taken responsibility for any of it. She won the seat instead, and she is asking for it again. The Sergeant Running Against Her Robert People spent 21 years in the Army, including three combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and retired as a Sergeant First Class. He was raised by a single mother. He is running to raise the cap on Social Security taxes so that people earning millions pay in on more than the first $176,000, which is how the checks stay funded. He has committed to holding open town halls at least four times a year, every year. He cares about making real change for the people. Those People Are Still Carrying This Some of those cases got thrown out. Some of those people pleaded to something. All of them spent a year of their lives finding out whether voting was going to cost them five years in prison. Laurel Lee’s office ran the checks that put them there, and she has spent four years in Congress without ever saying their names.
