Friend, In the span of a single week, ICE agents killed three people. In Maine, an agent shot and killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old with a valid work permit and Social Security number, as he sat in his car with his three-year-old daughter beside him. The next day in Florida, a man was struck and killed by a tractor trailer while fleeing immigration agents. Days before, in Houston, an agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a father of three and a small-business owner, as he drove. There have now been at least 11 murders by ICE since Trump took office. But instead of accountability, the Trump administration is conducting a cover-up. The FBI was told it will no longer investigate violent incidents involving immigration agents. Those cases will now be investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of ICE itself. This is a massive cover-up, a scandal that at any other point in American history would have ended in the impeachment and removal of a president. And it’s no surprise the Trump admin is desperate to bury the truth. The ACLU released a report that documented how ICE is routinely trampling constitutional rights in its violent operations. And recent reporting revealed that the ICE agent behind the Maine shooting had a documented history of domestic violence, including assaulting his daughter and threatening to slit his wife’s throat. These are the kind of people the Trump administration is handing a $50,000 signing bonus, a mask, and a gun before turning them loose on our streets. If Democrats retake the House and Senate this November, they reclaim control of key oversight committees, and with them the power to subpoena ICE officials, compel testimony under oath, and pry loose the documents this administration is burying right now. Given what we know now about ICE, just imagine what's being hidden. There is no doubt this is a major reason why Trump is working so hard to rig the midterms. He knows what Democrats would find, so he's trying to kill the investigations and the elections that would empower the investigators, all at once. There must be justice for the people ICE has murdered—but none of it is possible unless we make this election too big to rig. That's where Defend Our Courts comes in.
