On July 3, 2026, Donald Trump rejected four disaster aid funding requests from four blue states. Only two days earlier, he approved disaster aid funding requests from six red states. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Since he took office in January 2025, Donald Trump has engaged in an unprecedented politicization of disaster relief funding. So far in his second term, according to an analysis from Politico, he has approved only 23% of FEMA disaster relief funding requests from blue states, compared to 89% of requests from red states.

This is truly unprecedented, as this chart from Politico shows:

What's more, as Politico notes, when Trump approves disaster aid for red states, he often does so while simultaneously mentioning his endorsement of a local Republican candidate.

Since FEMA was founded in the late 1970s, every other president–including Trump during his first term–approved disaster aid for red and blue states at about the same rate. However, Trump has now turned disaster aid into another way that he weaponizes the federal government against those whom he considers his political enemies.

This is dangerous, disgusting, and needs to end immediately. Shining some light on the problem is the first step toward solving it.

You should know that, during his second term, Donald Trump has only approved 23% of disaster aid requests from blue states, compared to 89% of disaster aid for red states. This is unprecedented in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Every other president, including Trump during his first term, approved requests from red and blue states at similar, high rates (usually, about 80-85% each).

This is outrageous and needs to stop. Disaster relief should not be political.
