MIDDLEBORO REVIEW AND SO ON

Experts are bracing for a potential “massive, weeks-long” conflict in Iran as Trump amasses an “armada” of military firepower across the Middle East, including aircraft carriers, warships, and fighter jets — despite no explanation, justification, or congressional authorization.

It’s the same, failed violence-first strategy that has launched endless war after endless war, starts and ends with human suffering, and will do little to keep people in Iran, U.S. servicemembers, or anyone across the region safe.

We know exactly what we need to do to respond, because we’ve been here before. When Trump ordered strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, Win Without War helped lead the movement that pulled him back from an all-out war, just like we did multiple times during the first Trump administration.

It means mobilizing tens of thousands of activists to demand their elected officials use every tool they’ve got to block Trump’s path to war, going door-to-door on the Hill, on the phone, and via text to make lawmakers aware of the threat of inaction, briefing policymakers, movement leaders, and activists on how best to respond, sounding the alarm in the media, and launching eye-catching ads and mobile billboards that can’t be ignored with one singular demand: No War.

But that’s only the start. To pull us back from the brink of war again, we need to double down on these efforts and find even more innovative strategies — but doing so requires more resources than we have on hand.

Don’t let the war hawks try to convince you otherwise: We — people pushing for peace and justice — are the majority. An overwhelming 70 percent of U.S. voters oppose a president bypassing Congress to unilaterally launch military action.[1]

Our mission now is to make sure Congress receives every imaginable signal and listens to that voice, because we’ve just seen what can happen when a united majority of lawmakers from across the aisle show up to protect communities from violence.

Today, Homeland Security funding remains at a standstill, after lawmakers used their authority to force a partial government shutdown until demands are met to keep people safe from ICE’s violence. Congress must now use its power over matters of war and peace to stop Trump from inflicting more violence abroad.

For decades, they have ceded their authority to the presidency, but Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution makes it crystal-clear that Congress has the SOLE authority to declare when the U.S. goes to war. Not Trump. Unfortunately, Congress’ failures to rein in Trump thus far have only emboldened him to press on and act like a king.

Today as a handful of lawmakers from both sides signal opposition to an urgently needed bipartisan war powers resolution, the chance for violence is terrifyingly high. Military escalation against Iran is not about nuclear deals or promoting democracy. It is an attempt to launch an ill-conceived regime change war in Iran, long sought after by Trump, Israeli PM Netanyahu, and other war hawks.

Pushing Congress to put up roadblocks on Trump’s path to war requires a massive, sustained public pressure campaign, but that’s exactly what we’re racing to do. Even limited strikes would have devastating impacts for people in Iran and others across the region and any violence avoided means lives saved.

Diplomacy, not more bombs and bullets, is what will promote peace and keep people safe from violence. That’s why our team is doing what we do best: Turning up the pressure to stop a war. But we can’t do this crucial work alone.

The Iranian people alone, not Trump, PM Netanyahu, or war hawks in Washington, should determine their future. As we witness Trump’s slapdash attempt to turn Venezuela into a U.S.-run oil colony, we should all be highly suspicious that any U.S. military intervention would result in the more democratic and peaceful future that the Iranian people deserve.

Together, we can defeat the same failed playbook that led us into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and left the world less safe.

Never forget: While the path to war may feel inevitable, it remains a choice. And with hundreds of thousands speaking out to build a safer world at every turn, peace is still possible.

Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
