MIDDLEBORO REVIEW AND SO ON

Earlier this month, I emailed you about Trump's harebrained scheme to extort his own Justice Department for $230 million of taxpayer money.

We still have no idea if a settlement has been reached, or if the President has paid himself with our money, and we still haven't heard a single Republican condemn this blatant self-dealing from the leader of their party.

What we do know is this: he's trying it again.

Headline: Trump's lawsuit against the IRS creates 'enormous conflict of interest'. Subtitle: The president is demandinf that the federal government pay him at least $10 billion over the unauthorized disclosure of his tax returns during his first term.

Trump has now filed a second lawsuit against his own administration, this time targeting the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He is seeking $10 Billion (with a B!) of public funds as damages for "IRS negligence" which resulted in a whistleblower releasing his taxes in 2017.

Who was the President in 2017? He was.

This is what authoritarian figures do when they face no consequences for their actions. Given that no one in his party is willing to stand up to him, he's going to keep pushing the envelope on what he can steal from the American people until someone stops him.

That's why it's so crucial that Democrats take back the House majority in November. Will you donate $3 to my campaign ahead of our end-of-month fundraising deadline and help us hold this corrupt administration accountable?

Subject: It's your money and he wants it NOW

Last year, the President attempted to extort the Department of Justice for his own personal monetary gain.

Back in October of 2025, Donald Trump claimed that he was "harassed" by the Department of Justice under the Biden administration when the FBI conducted a raid to recover classified documents he was illegally storing in his bathroom at Mar-a-lago.

Trump violated the law by taking those documents with him when he left office (to do what, nobody knows), and as such, he was charged with mishandling classified documents.

Now, he's claiming that facing the consequences of his actions constitutes serious harm that can only be remedied one way: money.

He filed an administrative claim against the Justice Department, seeking $230 million in "damages". As the President, he not only appointed the Attorney General, who runs the Department, but also the majority of its senior leadership and the very officials who would be in charge of approving such a settlement.

I'm sure you can see the problem there.

But here's the kicker: since it's an administrative claim, not a lawsuit, there is no requirement for the Department of Justice to disclose if they've paid a settlement. In theory, the President could have pressured his lackeys into giving him $230 million of our taxpayer money, and none of us would have any idea.

I couldn't think of a clearer, more obvious example of straightforward corruption.

This is exactly the kind of "wasteful government spending" that my Republican colleagues love to rail against when Democrats try to lower healthcare costs, or make it easier to buy a home, or really just do anything to help working people get ahead. But paying the President $230 million because he committed a crime and got caught? Not a peep.

We quite literally can't afford any more of the GOP's hypocrisy; it's costing us more than taxpayer dollars.

Jim
