Russia Reopens Mariupol Theatre on a Mass Grave

The Russians dance on Ukrainian bones

As the world celebrates the holidays, Russia continues its brutal attacks across Ukraine, bombing residential buildings and leaving Ukrainians across the country without heat, power, or water. At the same time, the terrorist regime responsible for this destruction is openly flaunting the reopening of the Mariupol Drama Theatre—a building it deliberately destroyed in 2022 while hundreds of Ukrainians, including many kids, were sheltering inside, turning a mass grave into a stage for propaganda and daring the world to accept it as normal.

One of the first things I saw on X was a video of Russians dancing. It made me sick to my stomach, not because it’s surprising, but because it shows the moral bankruptcy on display as Russians knowingly celebrate on top of a mass grave.

Russians are intentionally flooding social media with videos of themselves dancing on the graves of Ukrainians they massacred. What is being touted as “reconstruction” is really part of the broader genocide the regime continues to carry out.

The Mariupol Drama Theatre is reopening under Russian occupation as part of Moscow’s reconstruction campaign in illegally seized Ukrainian territory, and the world must never forget why it was destroyed: the theatre was deliberately targeted during the siege of Mariupol precisely because civilians were hiding in its basement, believing the word painted outside—ДЕТИ, children—might spare their lives.

Painted in large white Cyrillic letters and clearly visible from the air, the warning was impossible to miss, and that’s why the Russian forces bombed the theatre, collapsing it inward, crushing families beneath concrete and steel, killing at least a dozen people confirmed by investigators, while the true number of those murdered is certainly far higher, with bodies left under rubble or buried in mass graves as occupation forces cleared the site.

The word ДЕТИ did not protect them, and showed the world Russia’s true intent of strategically targeting civilians in its genocidal invasion.

The bombing of the theatre became one of the defining symbols of Russia’s three-month siege of Mariupol, during which roughly 90 percent of the city was destroyed, and thousands of civilians were murdered in a campaign marked by starvation, indiscriminate shelling, and the systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure. Russia immediately denied responsibility, blamed Ukraine, fabricated lies about an internal explosion, and launched a sustained disinformation campaign to try to erase accountability. Simultaneously, Russian military propagandists celebrated the strike as it happened. However, independent investigations later concluded that Russian air-dropped munitions were responsible. Amnesty International said the attack was likely a deliberate war crime, and survivors confirmed there were no soldiers or military equipment inside. But Russia knew all of this.

Reopening the theatre is part of the same crime.

Authoritarian regimes do not stop after killing and move to control memory. By rebuilding the theatre without acknowledgment, justice, or naming the murdered, Russia is completing the final stage of violence—normalizing atrocity and converting a crime scene into a backdrop for propaganda. Former Mariupol actors have called the reopening “dancing on bones,” an accurate description of a regime staging performances atop the remains of civilians it murdered.

This spectacle is inseparable from the broader occupation—arrests, forced exile, torture, property confiscations, and Russification policies that strip Ukrainians of their homes unless they accept Russian citizenship. What is presented as reconstruction is coercion, enforced through fear, dispossession, and the systematic destruction of Ukrainian identity. And, what is framed as culture is domination, imposed to overwrite memory, silence survivors, and normalize occupation as permanence.

The reopening of the theatre in Mariupol shows how war crimes disappear when they are met with delay and fatigue instead of consequences—civilians are killed, responsibility is denied, time is weaponized, reconstruction is staged, and the crime is declared closed simply because memory was worn down and truth was allowed to die.

The word ДЕТИ remains written across this crime no matter what Russia does, and it is our job to ensure the international community never forgets what happened that horrific day—or the many other genocidal acts Russia continues to carry out. We can never allow Russians to rewrite history, no matter how hard they try.
