MIDDLEBORO REVIEW AND SO ON
People are being tortured in immigration detention facilities — people who should never have been locked up in the first place1. And I have witnessed the horrors myself. Our recent report details the brutal human rights violations at “Alligator Alcatraz” and Krome Detention Center: People are being chained to the ground, denied medical care, and held in cages with fecal matter seeping from toilets into where they are sleeping. Individuals shared stories with us of guards being violent (which I also witnessed). At Alligator Alcatraz, people are being thrown into the ‘box’, a 2x2-foot cage where people are shackled and unable to sit down or move, for hours, and without any water or protection from the sun. This is torture. It’s inhumane. It’s cruel. It’s illegal. And it must STOP. When we visited Krome, people yelled out to speak to us so we could tell the world what they’re facing inside Krome and what they faced while held at “Alligator Alcatraz”: “The medical neglect is huge. People are dying in detention. ICE just does not care. People complain and they just leave them there.” “Someone in my cage passed out. We were yelling at the guards for help. The guards came in and pushed a bunch of people to the ground. They took the man out on a stretcher.” “When I was at “Alligator Alcatraz”, someone died. I heard a lot of screaming. But there’s no way to know what actually happened to the person because we’re not registered in ICE’s system.” My team and I are counting on your generosity. It’s going to take even more of us getting involved to prevent ICE from committing violations and to shut down these abusive detention centers. If you renew your support today, your donation will be matched $4 for every $1 to help protect people at risk.
The conditions we documented at “Alligator Alcatraz” and Krome are not isolated. They represent a deliberate system of cruelty designed to punish people seeking to build a new life in the U.S., or make them suffer so badly they give up their immigration cases and self-deport. It’s appalling and flat-out wrong that immigrants in the U.S. have to worry about getting abducted by masked agents… tortured in detention centers… entrapped by the Trump administration’s cruel mass deportation machine. The administration is turning the white nationalist ‘Great Replacement Theory’ into a living, breathing federal policy. In 2025. With each cruel blow from President Trump, we need to mount an even bigger response. Your tax-deductible year-end gift of $25 becomes $100 to document and expose ongoing violations in immigration detention facilities so that we can shut them down. Your $50 becomes $200 to free people who have been unlawfully detained, deported, or expelled so they can reunite with their families and reclaim their rights. Your $100 becomes $400 to defend the rights of people most at risk.

As conditions worsen in detention centers and attacks on the rights of immigrant communities are piling up faster than ever, our resources are stretched thin. Many of the worst abuses happening right now will never make the news unless we are there: documenting them, naming them, and demanding change. Thank you for powering this critical and existential fight,
