Biden Secures Ceasefire in Gaza1.15.25Good evening and welcome back to Today’s American News. Our mission is to deliver news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment by recapping the day’s top headlines. We’ll keep it short and relevant. President Biden secures ceasefire in Gaza… Set aside for a moment the cast of bizarre characters parading around the U.S. Senate committee rooms. In fact, set aside for a moment the entire 2024 election and let's take a moment to genuinely celebrate the fact that after months of delays a ceasefire has finally been reached in Gaza. Flanked by VP Harris and Secretary of State Blinken, President Biden announced the agreement today. It includes a pause in the fighting and measures to ensure the safe return of hostages. Bondi hearing makes Trump’s revenge agenda seem more real than ever… Today’s headlines make clear Trump and his cronies intend to make good on a promise to waste Americans’ time and taxpayer dollars by seeking retribution against his enemies. MSNBC contributor and Punchbowl News co-founder Jake Sherman reports “the appetite is quite high” among Congressional Republicans to launch bogus investigations of Liz Cheney and Jack Smith. Bondi refused to answer a question on possible prosecutions of Cheney, Smith, and Attorney General Merrick Garland. Ugh. Biden gives farewell address from Oval Office… Bittersweet doesn’t begin to describe it, but we are grateful for the leadership Joe Biden has provided our country for the last four years. He saved us from two consecutive terms of a Trump presidency and his effectiveness in pushing major legislation like infrastructure across the finish line will be remembered kindly by history. Biden’s farewell remarks made numerous indirect references to Donald Trump and his powerful pals, including this eye-popper: “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead.” Oof. Yep. Trump, via Mike Johnson, rips intel gavel from staunch Ukraine supporter… Add a sitting Republican member of Congress and the chair of a powerful committee to Trump’s victims. Speaker Johnson bowed to Trumpworld demands by removing, without explanation, Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) as chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Turner has been among the strongest Republican advocates for American aid to Ukraine as our ally continues to push back against Russia’s brutal invasion. Today’s Buzz Variety has an “Ultimate Awards Guide” and we’re obsessed… Firefighters from as far as Maine and from Canada and Mexico have assisted California’s heroes and the joint effort has mostly contained the wildfires in southern California. As we continue thinking about the victims, we wanted to share Variety’s guide to the nominees for upcoming awards shows. Whoever compiled this deserves a raise and a week off. Hopefully the ceremonies are able to pay tribute to all of the volunteers who came together to support their communities and raise the funds necessary to help families in need. Thanks for reading the latest in the unrelenting circus that is America. Check back in tomorrow evening for the next edition of Today’s American News. |
