The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is launching an investigation into price gouging grocery corporations.
The price of groceries went up 25% between 2019 and 2023 — a price jump higher than all other consumer goods and services in the U.S.1
"We want to make sure that major businesses are not exploiting their power to inflate prices for American families at the grocery store," FTC Chair Lina Khan said. Congress must join the FTC to combat price gouging at the supermarket.2
A recent FTC report says that corporate supermarket chains took advantage of supply chain disruptions during the pandemic to squeeze out smaller grocery stores and pad their profits. That’s not all — the FTC concludes that supermarket executives used the pandemic as an opportunity to jack up grocery prices.3
While the FTC pursues a crackdown on corporate greed, Senator Warren is leading on her bill, the Price Gouging Prevention Act. Senator Warren said of the bill, “Giant corporations are squeezing American families for fatter profits. It’s time to give the Biden administration stronger tools. Senate Democrats and I are renewing our push for a new law to crack down on corporate price gouging.”4
It’s corporate price gouging. It’s corporate greed. It’s greedflation. CEOs are behind the giant rise in costs for consumers at the grocery store and beyond, not so-called inflation. To prevent price gouging and hold corporations accountable for greedflation, Congress must pass Senator Warren’s legislation now.
