Five Questions with Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocha

Tonight’s guest for Five Questions is someone you are likely familiar with, former federal prosecutor and current Westchester County, New York, District Attorney Mimi Rocha. In addition to being my former DOJ colleague, Mimi and I also worked alongside each other as legal analysts at MSNBC before she was elected. We frequently write together, including a piece this week with our good friend, Supreme Court analyst Dahlia Lithwick, about the Pete Hegseth confirmation process.

But tonight, Mimi and I turn our attention to an important issue that has taken a back burner in the public’s attention as Donald Trump put more pressing democracy issues on the front ones: abuses by police officers. Mimi did something amazing in the face of a great injustice; she stood up for people who wouldn’t have had a voice without her. This is about law, not politics, and it’s a story you’ll want to hear.

The New York Times article about it begins like this: “Two women, 65 and 75 years old, were taken to a police station in Mount Vernon, N.Y., after a traffic stop in 2020. Officers instructed both women to undress. Then they were told to bend over and cough. Neither woman was arrested, and an investigation determined there had been no basis for the traffic stop in the first place. One of the women said she had been left ‘very humiliated’ and ‘on the verge of fainting’ from fear after the invasive search, commonly used in drug arrests.”

I’ll let Mimi tell us the story of what she did.

“Five Questions” is a feature for paid subscribers, my way of thanking people who are able to support this work so that I can devote the necessary time and resources to it. I appreciate everyone who reads the newsletter and works to stay informed, so free subscriptions, with access to all of the other posts, will always be available. Thank you for engaging in the hard but essential work of civil discourse at this critical time in our nation’s history.
