Welcome back to Today’s American News, your evening source for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment.
SCOTUS ready to uphold ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth… The bought-and-paid-for U.S. Supreme Court handpicked by Donald Trump appears likely to once again substitute their judgment (and the judgment of right-wing Republican politicians) for the right of Americans – and in this case, parents – to make their own health care decisions. At issue in oral arguments today was a Tennesee ban on gender-affirming care for minors. About half of U.S. states have passed such bans in a wave of anti-transgender laws passed across the country. To anyone holding their breath that the supreme court might actually have the compassion to do something right when it comes to trans youth, do not hold your breath.
High-ranking House Dem, passes baton to younger challenger… Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) has long been the top Democrat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, but today he passed the torch to a younger leader. Congressman Jamie Raskin, a fellow Democrat whose strong, silver-tongued approach toward fellow Republican committee members has impressed the party’s base, had recently announced a challenge to Nadler in his post as ranking member of judiciary. Nadler is the latest in a series of senior Congressional Democrats to give way to a younger Democratic leader, something we love to see.
A healthcare CEO’s murder is major news because he was rich… The corporate media seems to value some lives more than others once again. One of today’s biggest news stories, plastered across nearly every media news site, was the murder of a health care CEO in New York City. We’re not going to link to it or cover it from the media’s angle. We will, however, point out that the wall-to-wall coverage of this individual’s murder exists precisely because he had money. In other news: Murders of people will less money happened across the country today.
Hegseth in jeopardy as Trump considers appointment of… DeSantis??? Fox News C-list host Pete Hegseth’s nomination for defense secretary is in peril, but he says he’s not dropping out. Hegseth is on Capitol Hill meeting with Republican senators, more than three of whom have expressed trepidation with the Trump defense nominee’s past misconduct allegations. Meanwhile, Trump is considering a presidential appointment for Florida Governor Ron “Meatball Ron” DeSantis – much to the chagrin of MAGA diehards who listened to the horrible-but-not-undeserved things Trump said about him in the past.
