As Governor of North Carolina, one of Roy Cooper’s top missions has been to get people healthier. That’s why he prioritized expanding Medicaid from Day One — and just over a year ago, after years of twists and turns, Medicaid expansion was finally enacted.
It wasn’t easy, but we never gave up on our goal of leveling the health care playing field to get working North Carolinians the care they deserve.
After trying to expand Medicaid during his first week in office, the Republican legislature sued Gov. Cooper in federal court. But in 2023, some of those same legislative leaders joined him to sign the Medicaid expansion bill we needed for so long. It was a bold step that will have a positive impact on our state for generations to come.
We are proud and grateful that nearly 600,000 North Carolinians have already enrolled in Medicaid through the expansion just one year later. That’s the number we originally hoped to see in two years!
Passing expansion also unlocked more than $830 million in new investments in mental health and addiction treatment that we know go hand in hand with staying healthy.
Not only will it make our state healthier, Medicaid expansion will also help North Carolinians achieve greater educational and employment opportunities. People need to be healthy in order to get educated and to work at good jobs to make money for their families. This is a big win for all of North Carolina — and we couldn’t have done it without you.
