Shortly after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, insiders claimed the former president was planning to "seize his moment by toning down his Trumpiness." You know, pivot. Make the case to voters that he isn't actually the hellhole of a human that Trump himself proves to be, over and over again.
Well, so much for that effort. On the final night of the Republican National Convention, Trump rambled for more than 90 minutes, lashing out with the same ugly lies to the point of genuine boredom. So I appreciated David Frum's bit of optimism this morning, a piece that argues that the Trump onstage in Milwaukee on Thursday should give Democrats confidence that they can beat Trump in November.
Taken together, it's a recipe for an even more dangerous MAGA White House. In any event, kudos to my stellar colleagues for enduring four days at the RNC. I certainly could never do it!

Help us build peace in an urgent moment of crisis.
Win Without War envisions a world where everyone can live with dignity and thrive — without fear of violence. Together with you, and hundreds of thousands of others, we’re pushing the U.S. government away from military-first solutions that enrich weapons contractors and leave communities struggling and in fear. Learn more now.
Yet, we just came up pretty short on our fundraising campaign.
So even though we’re done screaming about the donations we need for a while, if you value the journalism we do but haven’t pitched in recently, pleaseconsider doing so now—we urgently need a lot of help to make up for lost ground.
And of course, THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who has pitched in. It means the world to us.
