Well, J.D. Vance is not disappointing . . . at least to cartoonists. Sometimes a word pops in my head that I think will work for a cartoon, but I really don’t know what it means. “Entropy” is just such a word, although I decided it might be a little too obscure for using in this first cartoon. I had to look it up, and the definition (2nd) fits perfectly:
. . . So I went with “J.D. Dance” instead. This guy. The changes and convictions he’s held (and then un-held) over the past few years are astounding. The biggest is, of course, going from calling a guy “America’s Hitler” to becoming his running mate. I love that Vance has managed to anger people who don’t have children and people who love cats, at the same time! Next up, ol’ J.D. will rant about how dogs are a sign of weakness because Joe Biden has dogs. (Okay, biting dogs, but still, dogs.) Any chance I have to draw dogs and cats talking, I will do it. This seemed like a perfect time for a less political cartoon-y drawing, something that showed dogs and cats and their shades of political awareness. I pictured this dog and cat inhabiting the pages of the New Yorker, so I drew it in that loose, black and white style. Really, this is very autobiographical. Not because I am a dog. (I am not.) But because my family has a wonderful dog and incredible kids — and I’ve been feeling a little self-conscious ever since Vance ripped on “childless cat ladies.” Just because I am in a Vance-approved familial relationship (wife-kids-dog), does NOT mean I support the Trump/Vance ticket. The Trumpers have tried to steal the U.S. flag for their evil purposes, they are not going to co-opt my dog! While Vance is focused on being “weird” and going after people who don’t have children, Donald Trump is squirming on stage before the National Association of Black Journalists and accusing Kamala Harris of not being a Black person. Keep going, Donald and J.D., keep going! Thanks for reading and thanks for following my cartoons, I’ll see you back here shortly 😃, -Mark |
